5e7 acting up.......
I plugged a 5e7 head in today that had been sitting for a few months and some strange things occurred.... very pronounced loud honking sound? after volume was past halfway (up to half way sounded normal)...
another thing I noticed was each of the tone controls made a different distorted noise or high pitch squeal when dimed.. before putting up the amp a few months ago I added a grid stop to remove a little harshness when driven.. I reversed the mod thinking that might be it... still same problem...
next I thought it possible that I crossed the blue and brown ot wires last time I was in digging around.. switched them and got the squeal you get when there soldered in wrong... so I put them back the way they were... checked for loose wire bad solder joint.. all looked good...Checked the tubes they seem fine so it has me thinking bad filter cap or ot???
Any thoughts to get me in the right direction...
Thanks

Did you try different tubes?
How's the rectifier?
Apparently electrolytic caps last the longest when the amp is powered on somewhat regularly.
Sitting idle for long periods of time seem to be the worst thing for them.
How are the pots? Did they get scratchy after sitting dormant?
The high pitched squeal sounds more like an instability or oscillation.

???? Have any positive feedback? Who is Miles?vibratoking wrote:You're just joking right? Did it actually work a few months ago? I can't see how if the OT leads were swapped. Possibly the honking is a VW horn you installed along with the grid stoppers and forgot about?

OK then, I apologize. I didn't know you were serious.
Re: 5e7 acting up.......
Tried a different rectifier and tubes which give me the same issue. I will test the caps and see where that leads...

No apology needed... actually liked the VW horn bitvibratoking wrote:OK then, I apologize. I didn't know you were serious.

One of the key things when tweaking an amp is to change only one thing at a time, the test the amp.
That way if you don't like the results, reverse the tweak.
If you do too many things at once you won't know what is causing the problem.

Thanks Tom.... you have been very helpful in the past with me also.. and I appreciate that.. I am just perplexed on this as it worked very nicely the last time I played it.. I found the issue with the tone controls and they work without noise but when I turn either the normal or bright volume past the halfway point I get a wild oscillation noise.... a noise unlike I have ever heard... I went through the amp again today and I find nothing out of the norm which leads me to believe it a filter cap or the OT.. I took the tubes out and put them in my sons 5e7 and they worked fine..
