increasing weak pickups

Post by BobW »

I acquired a set of chinese strat cloned pickups for next to nothing, since their outputs were so weak. I measured the resistance of each pickup and they are within the fender range ~ 6k each, but they just have a weak output. I am wondering if each pole's magnet strength can be increased by placing 6 small neodymiun magnets in series under each pole? Has anyone considered this or should I go back and read my college Physics book for why it won't work?

That will increase string pull and warble tones
might be better to have someone remag your pickups

Thanks.
I considered that, and Stew Mac has a good tutorial and tools for remagnetizing strat PU magnets, using larger Neo magnets.

Well, I already ordered 6 small neos from a surplus store for under $4. I will still give the magnets a try, and report back the results...guess I can always use them for refrigerator magnets if they don't work. 8)
