Building Soldano style preamp in a Yamaha T50

Post by chopstuck »

Got myself an early Soldano sp-77 series II preamp in a very slightly purple finish. I just wanted to say how much I enjoy it compared to the Yamaha T-50 I have been working on and off over the past couple years.
I have found the schematic but it's a little different in layout from what I'm used to.

I'm about to sell off the T-50, though it has good iron and a nice layout/ footprint.

I have an idea to convert the T-50 pre to the Soldano design. The power amp sounds great. I'm just thinking about the PC board. Is the design close enough to mod the pc board or do a new preamp tag board ?

I'm just thinking that the last few Soldano designs I had looked at were pretty similar in layout. Like two of the three channel preamp channels and the two Yamaha channels.

Good time waster ?

I always wanted to play through a Soldano.
They were the king of lead guitar was I was younger.

Not sure I would want to build one though.

He uses quite a few Vactrols in his design, not sure if these are easily sourced.

Don't let that smoke out!

VTL5C1 are easy to be found, but they are costy.
But it's possible to build a SLO100 with something like 600 bucks.

Chop, what do you want to obtain exactly from the T50?

I did the mods Roberto suggested and can say it helped but I don't care for the character of the amp. Just really harsh. I have used the power amp to slave into and that sounds great. The problem as far as I can see is the preamp character. I believe everything is working correctly . No odd noises or behavior.
I wanted to try to keep the switching system and change the preamp to more closely resemble the SP-77. I like both the clean and the drive channel. Maybe delete the reverb, possibly for an effects loop.

It just seems that for the $350 I can get for the amp, I could use it as a cheap basis for a soldano type sound. Transformers, chassis cabinet hardware and PS is the spendy part of a build. THe preamp is all labor and maybe $50-70 in parts. (staying with good but not crazy expensive parts).

I'm not familiar with the SLO sound but I like this preamp plenty.
