Top Boost for EL84 "Vox" Build?

Post by Kinkless Tetrode 66 »

I am currently building a "Vox" for a friend. I would be using a Epiphone Valve Jr. circuit (so in a way, I am not really building anything... :( ), but I am wondering if there is a simple and compact way to add a Top Boost-like tone voicing after the single input jack. I have looked up the original circuit and it seems to be a little bit too involved/difficult for this project. Is there any simple circuit that would make a somewhat convincing Top Boost? Also, are there any circuit mods you would recommend? Thanks.

The Vox Top Boost channel is pretty simple by itself (though the whole AC30/6 is a huge, complex monster) and is the basis for the Trainwreck Rocket: https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=5684

A lot of the character comes from the bright cap on the volume pot, and the cascaded gain stages in the preamp.

I just recently put this together, it's one of the best functioning VJr circuits I've heard.

I changed the volume pot to a 500k, if you want you could leave the volume pot stock and leave stock 1M R7 in circuit ... you can solder the bright cap into the bottom of the volume control circuit board.

I would increase R15 to a minimum of 56k if you want to tame the highs more increase that to a 100k or even 150k.
