Check your solder joints!! (weird overtones)

Post by Markusv »

Hi Folks

Decided to build myself a bit of a Christmas present (from spare parts)
Bogen Challenger 50 PT
Fender 50ish watt replacement OT

Rocket preamp running into 2x EL34
No choke. I used the 1K resistor of the Liverpool/ express design
Lowered the tail resistor to 20 K
High plate and screen voltages ( high 400's) Given the weird PT. It used to run with a voltage doubler and that's how I used it
Loud cleans and starts to break up around 4 on the dial but by then the ears bleed
I am still tweaking and am considering dropping screen voltages and preamp voltages a bit for a softer attack
The tone stack is lovely. From dark, grungy to chime up the ying yang. Love the Cut control in conjunction with the tone stack

In a combo with an Eminence Governor 12

Here is something interesting:
I had these weird overtones initially- especially hitting a single string. Sort of an octave lower ghost
Turned out to be a cold solder joint on the cathode of one power tube
Re-flowed and its rock solid now

Cheers,
Have a great new year and thanks for being such incredible people!!

Well, that's a good news/bad news situation. Or a bad news, um, depends, I guess.
