Oliver Sound Amp
Hey,
Does anyone know how much these amps are worth? I can't find much info on them other than the history of the company. A lady I know is getting rid of one and all I know about it is that its a head in need of some repairs. Thanks!

Re: Oliver Sound Amp
Jess Oliver is still actively doing repairs on those. He is in his 80's but, still very active with amps. He was at the NJ ampfest last November.

I've heard the name. What's the history?
Re: Oliver Sound Amp
Jess was the head engineer for Ampeg in the 60's, then left to start Oliver. Very cool amps with the head that retracted into the cab with a motor.David Root wrote:I've heard the name. What's the history?
Re: Oliver Sound Amp
Jess designed the first B15 Ampeg port-a-flex amp for Ampeg back in the 60s and later his own line, "Oliver" amps

Ampeg, that's it! He had a big falling out with the founder of Ampeg, Everett Hull, who was pretty narrowminded about a lot of things. Rumors that Hull screwed Oliver over on a business agreement.

Re: Oliver Sound Amp
I've got an Oliver with the retracting motor driven head in a single 15" cab, it's a great sounding amp! It's got a lot better sound than the B15N that I had did. The power section is two 7027A's and there are no 12AX7's in the preamp. The 5AR4 rectifier is the only commonly used tube in it. It uses 6EU7's and I think a 6AN8 for the PI I can't remember for sure what the other tubes are. It's got great reverb and tremolo too! There is a small group of people that are really into these, but they aren't that well known. Phil

Re: Oliver Sound Amp
Having all big glass octals in the preamp will do that, along with real 7027As, for bass. Big and clean but nice and warm too, right?

There are no big octals in the preamp, I'll get the tube numbers later I've got a noon surf gig I'm heading to right now.

Re: Oliver Sound Amp
My mistake, 6EU7 and 6AN8 are both 9-pin types. I generally associate 6xyz with octal glass, but it ain't always the case!
Re: Oliver Sound Amp
Didn't the Sano brand name also come from a business split with Mr. Hull? I believe they were initally targeting Accordian players?
Mr. Everett seems like an interesting character!

Re: Oliver Sound Amp
I have a single 15" ported Oliver combo. It has two 6l6s and two 6eu7s. It sounds pretty good, but isn't loud enough to use on a gig.
Does anyone have access to any schematics on these? Mine seems to have no model number, so I can't even forward that info.
I think I've seen the 7027A one, was it called the B-150 or something like that? The one I remember didn't have the auto head escalator, but it was a bass combo with four band EQ. I'd love to see that schematic.
Thanks,
Skeezbo
