Hole Technology

Post by The New Steve H »

A while back I decided to locate end mills in the right sizes to make tube holes in chassis. I found a couple on Ebay. Today I used them.

This is a pretty neat way to make accurate holes. The holes are very clean, perfectly circular, and located precisely to within a couple of thousandths. They don't have burrs. The sockets fit very closely, without a lot of wobble. And all you do is move the mill table the exact distance you want, each time you drill. You don't have to fool around with a ruler or whatever. You don't have to pray the drill press or the punch is on target.

I used a .310" center drill to make the other holes.

This is structural aluminum, but it would work with a regular box.

I know most people aren't nutty enough to buy a mill, but you never know what will turn up on Craigslist.

This is an old photo from the day it arrived.

You don't need a new one to make amp boxes, though. Old machines lose precision, but you don't need to be all that accurate when you're situating a tube.

Nicer than my mill. DRO and power feed.

I have an older Index mill, similar to this

Wells Index has a great reputation. I had to go Chinese because there is no machinery down here.

Unlikely. I think hell has factories for miles. Just no QC.

"Man, I been the Devil for all of my life, but I'd never been to Hell 'til I met your wife.."

Sorry, just reminded of The Devil and the Farmer's Wife.

He's in Miami, draw your own conclusions!
