Just blew up my Peavey Classic 30

Post by blues junkie »

I'm soooooooooooooooooo pissed right now I can't even think straight. :x I turned my Peavey Classic 30 on and noticed it would'nt come on... so I look over at my power strip and noticed it was off... so I reach over and turn the power strip on, while the amp was on.

As soon as I did it I knew I screwed up. The amp has no sound but the pilot light is on, so I look at the back of the amp and Power tube V4 is not heating up, so I take the tube out and it has a huge crack in it. I put a new tube in turn the amp back on and nothing... V4 is barely heating up still no sound. :x

Did I blow up my PT? Or my OT? All the other tubes are lit up. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Nope. Open amp up. Look at output tube sockets.

V4. Look the big resistor across the socket. See the little one below it?

You have toasted screen grids. Leave the amp off til you replace both of them with new ones, and while you are at it replace the big ones above those too with a couple watts higher, same ohms.

:)

You're welcome.

Hijack: I can't think why turning your amp on from a power strip, which is a contact switch, versus turning your amp on using its own contact switch would make any difference, or be harder on the amp. Folks?

And you guys are right.

The tube was broken before the power was turned on. Most commonly from turning your combo into a suitcase/toolbox/cable storage.

Just the facts, ma'am..

Tubes were brand new ( about a week old) The amp had been sitting in the same place for 2 weeks, nothing near it. I had played the amp about an hour earlier... shut it off, turned off the Power strip. I came back, turned the amp on, then turned the power strip on and bang nothing.

I did'nt use the amp as a suitcase/toolbox/ or cable storage.

The only thing I did was have the amp on whe I turned the Power strip on, the amp sounded great an hour earlier.

Those are the facts.

I to found it strange that turning the amp on via the power strip would cause a problem

Maybe it was just a coincedence that it happened when the I turned it on with the power strip... I don't know.

I think the tube was cracked the last time it cooled from a defective envelope.

The tube would break from temperature change, tube would run for a few minutes til it hit a temp range going back up, but it didn't.

It flashed when you flipped the switch.

Open envelope before power. p000f! i like that smell, but I can't stand the visual. ;)

This may seem too obvious but did you check all the fuses?

Strange that the tube would crack.

Might be coincidence.

I've had a new el 84 do the same thing on my blues jr. I put anew set of jj's in and blew a tube within the first couple hours of use. I lowered the bias current & haven't had the problem since.

With the peavey classic series check the wire jumpers that hold the board together. I've repaired a number of these in my shop & it's quite common for those to break.

Heed Harleyboy's advice, working on the Classic 30 is not as easy as an old Fender chassis. Be gentle and take your time. (wait, I heard that somewhere before).

I agree that powering up the amp with for power switch in the on position had nothing to do with the tube issue. Classis 30s without the tube protection shield that Peavey now includes, are notorious for ruining tubes while stowing the power cable. They sound great with a few mods tho...

Thanks everyone for the replys. :D

The fuses are good.

I pulled the chassis out of the cab and realized I'm in over my head. I've built 1 amp (RJ's eagle) and that is it... it's off to a tech with more experience with a classic 30.

Thanks.
