Re: Wire from McMasterrs. is it ok for amp builds?
I've gotten most of the wire I've used from McMaster. I've gotten the rest from Apex.
The McMaster I'm using is solid core 20AWG and 18AWG, for hookup and heaters. It's PVC insulated tinned copper, 600V, in a multitude of colors. I also get an assortment of stranded wire in 20AWG for certain runs.
My only beef with McMaster is that the lengths I've ordered, from 25 to 50 feet, almost never come on a spool. Mostly it has been in fairly large loops (coils of 12 inches or so), which is fine, but occasionally it seems that the length of wire was just wrapped around someones hand. Not a problem with stranded, but kind of a drag with solid, as I don't want to bend and re-bend solid any more than I have to as it will eventually break. The hand wrap is full of kinks and sharp bends. Other than that, I'm very happy with the wire and have successfully built about a dozen amps with the stuff. You just have to be careful with melting the PVC.
