Lang Amps

Post by sabredude »

Anybody know anything about these amps? I have a buddy who bought one and it doesn't seem to work right. Plus he told me some odd things about it that I can't seem to find any details around it. Their website has NOTHING on it worth a crap. Looking at the amp, it has 4 octals that he tells me came with EL34's but the amp is 50w and the output/power transformers look way too small - possibly even for 50 w. It has something like 8 12ax7's in it and gets feedback if you turn the amp up too high (like 7!) without a instrument plugged in. I can tell is feedback on the first tube as i can tap it lightly when it's close to feeding back and induce the feedback. I can feel the whole chassis vibrate when it's feeding back as well. Additionally, its very noisy and gets noisy when you turn the volume all the way DOWN. Almost like some loose solder joints or something. He tells me that the amp is designed to have the outside two tubes removed for half power with no changes in switches or impedance. Sounds kinda crazy - hoping somebody has a manual or some info on this.

If there is a website, maybe there is an actual company? Maybe because you've got one in your possession they'd be willing to provide a schematic? You should ask if you can.

I see :x . I guess Eddie VanHalen, Joe Bonamassa, or Carlos Santana knows where to find them. Try contacting them!

OK tell us what is it or is not doing.

If the only problem is the feedback. Lets break it down and fix it.

The feedback is most likely caused by a faulty preamp tube, power tube, or dead/dying capacitor.

What have you done so far to troubleshoot?

Is this amp on your bench or just a buddy has it and you want to be johnny on the spot?

Old amps often had small iron. Iron cost $

Pictures would be helpful. ( clear easy to tell detail.)

Has the amplifier been modified (that you or the owner) are aware of?

Lang web site states custom transformers are used in design.

There is an email link plus a contact me page you can fill out and they can get back to you.

Most likely tubes are the problem.

If it has so many tubes but nothing large on the input grids I bet I can guess where screaming is coming from.

Now that I have one success under my belt I guess I should get into business too.

The new Lang has nothing but name rights to the vintage amps.

Not sure I really want to troubleshoot this amp. It is brand new and the owner has about a dozen amps that I' m either working on or will be working on shortly (owns a touring company) and this should be under warranty. He tells me he tried another amp of theirs and was impressed then bought this one and it appears to be junk. With all the wierd stuff going on plus the tiny transformers, crappy and unresponsive website, I wanted to see if maybe I was missing something. The amp looks like chinese junk with extremely cheap components like you would find on a bugera or behringer but I am surprised that my customer would have bought it unless there was seomthing to it.
BTW - he has swapped all of the tubes to JJ's. I moved the first tube to another slot and it still feeds back way too quickly but with no manuals and no schematics, I don't have a clue if it's design or a failure in the system.

IMHO the new LANG are shit. I was under the impression it was a vintage amp. Absolutely send it back.

I am the owner and builder of Lang amps. I have never built an amp with 8 preamps tubes so this is BS. I already posted that I can be reached at langamps.com

I think folks should cut this guy some slack. Is there a reason to have an ax to grind? See for your self. It's not his fault someone spoofed his business with a similar website name. This happens all the time. It is internet bullying.

Now if you happen to like or not like his product, that's a whole different thing. Everyone's entitled to an opinion.
