but the Express has those diodes on the power tube sockets to protect against just this. Some people don't like the sound of doing this so much but I suspect they are using lower wattage speakers that sound best when pushed.
Speaking of flyback, and Majors...
Diodes on the powertubes. Hmm.. So, how big should I go on my amps just to sample what that does? I haven't built an Express beyond the PI. Never noticed that. 1.4k output, KT88s and enough voltage to dry your hair.
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.
I added these (used IN4007s) years ago to all of my amps, and eventually wound up taking 'em out.
My complaint wasn't tone related, I didn't notice any change in tone, but in the 'feel' of the amp. This seemed to make the amp feel stiff for lack of a better word. There was just no 'give'. The effect was very subtle, and I really have no explanation for why this happened, but it was just noticeable enough that it wound up bugging me.
Tried this in a blonde 6G6-B Bassman with SS rectification, a '72 50 watt Marshall head, also with SS rectification (both of these through a Marshall 4X12 with Greenbacks), a '69 Deluxe reverb with 5U4GB rectifier, and a Ampeg B25B with 5AR4 rectifier. So, yeah, I guess all of the speakers were pretty low wattage, but the effect seemed to be there at low or high volume.
Removed the mod from all 4 amps and they all felt normal again. All IN4007s were from the same batch so I guess there could be something there.
Again, I have no real explanation for it.
