DC30 having weird compression issue

Post by ninjadave7 »

Hey all,
I have a Ceriatone DC30 that has started to sound a bit over-compressed on the first channel. To be specific, when I hit a big chord it sounds big and open for about half a second then audibly "ducks", almost like it hit a big limiter and it clamped down. There are 2 12ax7 tubes, and I've tried both JJ's and EH and it's still doing it. Tried replacing PI tube also, but since it didn't happen with the ef86 I didn't think it would change anything and it didn't.

Second question would be, is there a good way to increase headroom a bit on both channels?

Thanks!

not a 100% sure but the dc30 should have a tube rectifier, might be worth changing the rectifier tube as it almost sounds as if the voltage is dropping to much

This could also be a failing out of spec filter cap.

How would I check the filter caps? Or should I just change out the ones before preamp supply node? I'm planning on changing Rec tubes anyways, so I'll be able to check that.
