Who's seen the inside of a Badcat Amp?

Post by leadfootdriver »

'Gotta think that all the hype about layout, and wire size isn't so important. One thing I noticed were the big honkin' resistors in those amps. What wattage are they?

the best thing about bigger resistors is that the lead thickness also scales up.

so with a 2watt resistor you get nice thick leads as well.

You also get the benefit of never stressing out the resistor. meaning it's working at 10-15% instead of 80% which helps cut down on the heat build up. Which may help control noise and drift? It's all relative to the quality of materials and enviroment.

I have some 1/2 watter metal films that I got from Hoffman, and those leads are like threads. I really hate that. The NTE brand stuff I get down the street have real beefy leads on them.

check the data sheets thin leads are great for PCB and wrapping on turrets. Thicker leads are better for eyelets and parts that get swapped out or moved. It doesn't make any one better then the other bottom line all resistors pass a minimum standard before they are sold.

ya it just matters how you plan on using them.

parts that get body contact to a pcb board don't need super thick leads.

however, if you look at a lot of commercial products built with 1/4 watt resistors you'll notice that they are packed very tightly to give each other support.

on the other hand there are resistors that have leads that won't fit into most pcbs.

I've got some RLR32s that have leads that are 18gauge solid core.

That is only a sign of bad engineering.

Or cutting cost. I've seen a lot of great engineering get slashed at the final stage to save $$$.

if relating to FX pedals is purely to keep the size down. In an attempt to fit on a pedal board. The consumer wants bigger better fast more out of a pedal but doesn't want it to be any bigger then a traditional BOSS. space is limited.

I have a Badcat Hotcat,I traded 2 Boogies for it.A Lonestar 2x12 combo and a Stilleto Head.I think I caught the bad end on that deal but I have to say it is an amazing amp.Clean is superb and the High gain is BADASS,Mikey

I just converted my project amp to a Mini Cat. The clean is great! It does the pushed distortion thing as well. It's a great sounding amp now. Much better than my crappy design. :D

I tried the schematic from Schematic Heaven, but the tone stack didn't work very well, so I tried the TS from a Hot Cat 30, and it works nicely.

That's just the Top Boost stack, no?

I used the TS from this schematic. It seems to act more parametrically than like a regular bass/treble controls. But I'm able to get crystal cleans, and fat midrange tone out of it.

I think I'm going to add a third gain stage from the Express amp to see how it sounds. :D I already have a 2nd 12AX7 in place from a previous incarnation.
