I'd like to build my brother in-law a hifi tube preamp and dual monoblock power amp set. I'd like to keep the cost under $2000 in New production parts and build it from scratch.
one to three channels of preamp (turntable, cd, ipod)
Middle of the road wattage, loud enough to be heard and recreate the full frequency range with detail.. but it's not going to be pumping the jams at an oakland house party.
I prefer to make this on a turret board or point to point build, not a PCB/kit.
Does anyone have a nice sounding tried and true schematic set?
Thank you-

Re: HiFi preamp / power amp schematics
seems overpriced for this book, if I can find mine I'll scan it but this is a good reference for HiFi as are any of the old glass audio magazines. I'm afraid with audio you will get more opinions than guitar ampsselloutrr wrote:I'd like to build my brother in-law a hifi tube preamp and dual monoblock power amp set. The Dynaco ST70 was a classic. There are plenty of people who make upgrade kits for them as well.

I just picked up an old Stereo Mac 275 power amp myself. Cant wait to have the time to refurbish it.
For the cost in parts to make a couple of mono blocks you could probably find a great old Dynaco and rebuild it for much less.
I know that is no fun but you would still have your hands full doing a restore on it. Anyway I wanted to do this myself until I ran across this Mac for nothing. A school was throwing it out !
If it is a labor of love try the Manley book but for quality transformers and chassis for two mono blocks plus you need to make a separate preamp you might be pushing it on the $2K
Re: HiFi preamp / power amp schematics
I agree it's easier, cheaper, and quicker to find a destressed model and rebuild it. it's just not the finished product I'm looking for. The chassis will be pretty modern to fit the decor.
I think I found a pretty straight forward power amp that runs KT77's at 25watts. I should be able to improve the circuit and beef up components and come out well under budget.
I run mostly Bryston in studio, one Crown DC, and Mcintosh 275.
That reminds me I think I have a few Mcintosh projects in the garage that need fixing. I end up with all sorts of projects that I put on the back burner and forget about or go through and then decide based on the cost of restoration it's not worth fixing.
thank you for the suggestions!
