If you rebuilt everything else I really recommend you replace the fiber
board with an epoxy one, that's actually the first thing I'd do to eliminate
it as a suspect for problems like this. Here's something quick you can
do that may help; try putting the suppressor caps back on and see if
that eliminates your distortion problem.
