I'm starting a project for a buddy. 6g4-A circuit. Question is what type of PT, OT and choke would I need to use? Any help with the evolution of this amp is helpful!
thanks

Re: Brown super amp build
pretty open questions...
lets start with... how many watts are you trying to achive? Hammond makes OT's for the 5881 that range from 15w up to 60w in push pull pair.
for the PT how many volts do you want? I'd assume around 300- 360v but it would be as much as 450v
it might be easiest to find where this schematic came from and see if they have a link or discription, even a pic of the iron they used in the build.

Here is the original schematic with voltages. To get 448V from a GZ34, the input from the HT secondary ought to be around 345-0-345.

Re: Brown super amp build
I would use a set of Brown Super transformers and choke if you wanna build THAT amp.....
Mercury Magnetics does offer such set and maybe some other companies too.

You can go this route if you don't mind paying top dollar. Or you can find parts of similar spec, if not perfect spec, from other companies for much less than what MM charges. I'm sure Magnetics Components has transformers that are appropriate..PaisleyTube wrote:I would use a set of Brown Super transformers and choke if you wanna build THAT amp.....

Re: Brown super amp build
Imo:
transformers do have the same impact on tone/feel as guitarpickups so specs/type/materials do matter.
example: lost of companies do sell 50 Watt Bassman/SuperReverb OTs...... while the Triad tweed Bassman OT differs from the (let's say) Schumacher SR OTs...
my question: do other companies offer tweed sets and brown sets and blackface sets of transformers, most of the time (imo) it seems kinda "one size fits all"

Re: Brown super amp build
I don't like my transformers to color the sound extensively. I use overrated iron so that I don't end up with transformer saturation-based frequency limiting effects. I don't know about the Schumacher output transformers but the Triad 5F6A transformers are pretty beefy and contribute to the sound only in that they don't get in the way. I'm pretty sure the Schumacher OT's are the same way, pretty beefy and don't extensively color the sound. I use circuit design and tube selection to tweak the sound..

Re: Brown super amp build
different.................
even very interleaved OTs do color somewhat, the tweed OT is more detailed/open/clear, the Schumacher (to my ears) less.
I see OT/PT/choke as part of the whole circuit so like every specific component it does have (a certain) impact on the tone besides circuit-values and topology.....
Try swapping OTs in a personal well known amp, chokes after that and then PTs.
Unf. not as cheap as resistors or caps (ha ha) but really fun to try!

Re: Brown super amp build
That is a Weber schematic so their website would list the transformers used in the kit from which you get the voltage for PT and the primary for OT.
Mojo, Triode and CED/AES would list suitable trannies for this build or even Weber if you wanted to.
