Building with mosfets
Anyone experienced with putting mosfets in eyelet board construction amps? I'd like to use one as a cathode follower as in the Mosfet Follies article. The leads are pretty close together, so I'm not sure how to secure and solder them into the circuit.

Re: Building with mosfets
Kevin O'Connor's TUT books (The Ultimate Tone) could help you. In the first 3 volumes there are sections on solid state including MOSFETS. He has lists of contents on his website www.londonpower.com.
I have soldered in reverb footswitch relays which have pretty flimsy connecting pins. I stick the relay to the chassis with doublesided foam tape which I use in my pickup building process. Then I try to split the wire strands into two roughly equal halves, get the pin in between and hit them with a little blob of solder. Not easy but when it works it looks quite professional, considering these things are designed to be wave soldered on a board.

Re: Building with mosfets
I realize I'm resurrecting a dead thread, and I've been pretty inactive myself lately - but then I'm not the best source of great ideas.
Just looking for input from anyone who has used power Mosfets per the Mosfet Follies article to replace cathode followers in tube amps. I'm contemplating converting an old PA head into a Soldano SLO clone, but considering using mosfets instead of a tube for the cathode follower stages. Any problems with that approach?

Let that boy boogie woogie.

Be sure that you understand the difference in behavior of a cathode follower vs. a source follower in respect to grid current. Because of this, the tube/MOSFET version will probably be much cleaner than the tube/tube version. Merlin's preamp book has a great explanation of this.
