Different trem/vibrato circuit in a Deluxe Reverb : problem

Post by CB Amp »

Hello,

I've tried different types of tremolo in a Deluxe Reverb. I was tired of the opto circuit, so I built a blonde/brown bias modulating tremolo. Everything works, but it suck a bit of sound and dynamics when off.
So I tried to mod it to a Vibro Champ tremolo circuit, applying the trem circuit on the cathode of the triode of the reverb recovery stage (as in a Vibro Champ, on the second half of the 12AX7).

The tremolo sounds very well, but the speaker has an oscillation, and makes some "pop pop pop" that correspond to the trem speed. And I can't remove it...
Won't this type of circuit suit a DR with a phase inverter stage and push pull end ? Or did I forgot something ?

Thanks for your help !

Had the same experience using the vibrochamp circuit in a standalone preamp. I think it may work in the vibrochamp because the small speaker can not reproduce the low frequency oscillation, and effectively acts like a high pass filter.

Or I may have done something wrong too - layout can be very critical with trem circuits.

You might have to add more RC filters (look at an AC30) to remove the super-low end frequency at which you are oscillating. Imagine that might suck some tone out too. :l
Life is a tale told by an idiot -- full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

My Deluxe Reverb had the same "tremolo tick" problem you are describing here. In the case of my amp, it turned out that there was a plate wire from the tremolo driver tube that had gotten moved and was too close to the grid wire from the adjacent tube (think it was the PI tube). Moved the plate wire around till I found a spot where the ticking stopped. 5 years later and it is still silent.

Thanks for your replies.
I don't think it has to do with high pass filter of the speaker. I used such a trem circuit in a single ended 6550 amp that I built a few years ago, with 2 10" speakers, and it was very fine (with deep bass).
But I will check the layout.
