GA5 Skylark problems

Post by 2point »

I came across this amp at a rummage sale in non working order. I changed the blown output transformer and changed the caps too on someones advice and the amp works now. I changed the speaker to a Weber ceramic as the original worked but was torn. It has two problems that are probably related. When turning the volume up from "0" to about 2 it gets loud fast then drops off abruptly as you keep turning the knob towards 3, getting louder again from that point up. Sounds nice at lower volumes but the bass farts out at high volume and attack. I upped the first filter cap from 20 to 30 upon other advice received on another forum, but this still hasn't solved it. The old pot was sticky too, So I replaced it with one of the same value and it still has the problem. I also tried other tubes (5Y3GT, 12AX7, 6V6). Still the same. Pretty soon everything will be new!

Anyone recognize these problems? (Non linear responce of volume pot and farting bass) Thanks for any help.

The schematic I looked at shows the pot as 1M linear. You could try a log taper and see it that keeps it from getting too loud, too fast. You might try replacing the .02 coupling cap that feeds the volume pot; if that's leaking all sorts of strange things can happen. What did you replace the OT with?

I'm with Firestorm, sounds like a leaky coupling cap.
