I'am in the process of ordering capacitors for my 5f6 bassman amp build and I see on the layout and the original fender schematics that 2 of the capacitors are rated at 250 volts instead of 600 volt how important is it.can I use the 600 volt capacitors instead of the 250
the capacitor on the presence control and the one that goes to the phase inverter are 250 volt.

Re: Capacitor voltage
Crudely speaking, the coupling caps could be rated to withstand the HT voltage spike that you get when you first flick the amp on, because that is the highest voltage they would see, were it not for the effect of the following grid load resistor. However, because the coupling caps 'see' the ground return through the following grid load resistor, this mitigates the initial voltage spike, so the actual voltage they see is somewhat less
Re: Capacitor voltage
What I need to know is can I use the 600 volt caps, does it affect the sound of the amp, what is the reason they use the 250 volt caps in these positions

Re: Capacitor voltage
Higher voltage caps are more expensive, and therefore were probably used only where the higher rating was necessary. You can use 600V everywhere, provided you have the room (they will be larger), and there will probably be no discernible difference in tone with respect to lower voltage caps of the same construction, i.e. dielectric material.
Re: Capacitor voltage
I used 600v on that PI cap and 400v on the presence cap if that helps.

Try swapping them for increased tonal range.M Fowler wrote:I used 600v on that PI cap and 400v on the presence cap if that helps.![]()

Re: Capacitor voltage
You had me wondering so I decided to make sure that is what I used and yup I had it the way I said.
So swapping them out gives tonal difference?

Hopefully, none! I never fuss over that stuff!M Fowler wrote:You had me wondering so I decided to make sure that is what I used and yup I had it the way I said.
