Best Shielded Wire

Post by Bob S »

I'm looking for a source for the most effective shielded wire. Thinking V1 in my Express & Liverpool clones in particular. Any help would be appreciated.

Belden RG174/U is my cable of choice. It's very small diameter so easy to work with, particularly low capacitance so you won't find yourself losing any top end, and has a very high percentage coverage with the shield so it's not prone to outside interference.

I sell RG 174 coax at .20ft -- $15.00/100ft but sell more of the
PTFE/Teflon 22 Awg 1 cond shielded which is silver plated.
There are a lot of guys here that can atest to the good of this
wire...

Also I've been doing this for awhile and have never seen or heard about
the RG 735 another thing for me to look out for.

Steve, it's the mini coax that's used in a Telcom central office environment for DS3's.

I have used Steve's 24 and 22 ga. coax. Prefer the 22 ga. which I believe is/was used by Soldano. Currently using some 22 ga coax I got from Funk, which is what he uses, or was using about a year ago when I bought it. It is lower capacitance than Steve's but a very tightly woven silverplated shield and thick teflon insulation.

I started using RG174 but its conductor is steel not copper, and it is only rated for 30V AC. I have used it where it would see 70 to 100 VAC with no apparent problems however. Then I moved to a Belden micro coax (8700), then to Steve's 24 ga. and so on.

I have seen comments from pro builders to the effect that the conductor gauge is as important as its capacity and shielding. I could see this in the wire directly feeding the power tube grids, but from input to V1 grid I have to think it is less important. Comments?

What is the white shielded coax used in some of the Dumble builds?

Here is a handy comparison sheet for several types of shielded wire:

http://www.tessco.com/products/displayP ... groupId=25

Gore RG-400 is top-of-the-line in the aircraft industry:

Matchless, among others, uses Canare instrument cable inside their amps:

The teflon shielded wire from ApexJr is mil-spec quality, and the price is very low.

The best shielded wire, and the cheapest by far, is salvadged avionics wire removed form aircraft. Its all mil-spec wire, teflon with braided shielding and they're long wire runs. I've salvadged several hundreds of feet of this stuff.

Did you wait until the aircraft landed before removing it?

Yes.

Salvadged wire generally won't be reused in the aircraft because they are all marked to conform with the wire diagrams of the aircraft.

Find a local avionics shop and ask nicely, assure them that it won't ever be used on an aircraft again and they will probably give you all you'll ever need.

I've purchased both 22ga and 20ga two-conductor with braided shield and teflon insulation off of Ebay. You'll have to search for the vendors.

Steve do you have any idea what the pf/ft on the 20 ga teflon single conductor shielded cable is?
