You didn't get both!
Some did have both. But they called the one, output tube matching. Which was setting the bias, buy listening to the hum.

And the hum balance pot, which i have seen quite a few burnt and need replace.

I've ordered some diodes so will give them a try in the heater supply - I like the idea of a variac but don't want to carry it around everywhere! Many thanks

Here's another trick that someone pointed me at a while back: http://www.geofex.com/Article_Folders/v ... ntvolt.htm

A lot of people permanently install something like this in their amps..
