59 Bassman

Post by travis-260 »

Hello,
I'm new to the forum and I need some help. I have decided that I want to build a 59 Bassman but I don't know where to start. I have looked at the kits (5F6-A) on ceriatone. I want to build as much of it from scratch as possible and I want to build the cabinet to look like a 59 bassman. Can anybody direct me to some good articles to read or website to look at the help me along in building a 59 bassman.
Thanks!

Fenders are an easy build mostly because you can find a layout and schematic for almost every amp they built.

Find the circuit you want print the schematic and layout
make a parts list and google for pics to follow

pick your chassis card and iron
try mojo music they have kits

start by mounting tube sockets and transformers
populate the board mount the board and make your grounds
run your wires to the tubes and tone stack
wire the rest
test all runs for continuity
add tubes form caps
set bias test voltages
and if all is good
play your new amp.

Sozo sells reissue blue tone caps
f&t makes a dual electrolytic cap ( two sprague sharing ground is half the cost)
Angela instruments sells nos fender parts
antique electronic supply
mojo music
eBay

your pt and ot is prob going to be a reissue so it's all about what you want to spend. Fender makes a reissue as does Hammond and just about every other transformer company in business if you pockets are deep mercury magnetics will help lighten your pocket book.

Cts pots are the fender pot of choice mojo has custom made pots I hear

cloth covered solid core wire in varios colors

Eyelet boards not turrets

Happy building!

Welcome Travis!

Excellent choice of a tried and true, venerable circuit. My first scratch build as well.

All true from selloutrr!

But...if you are only going to buld one amp (sure...like your going to eat only one Lays potato chip!) you might consider buying a pre-loaded board to avoid the cost of tooling and potential frustration of sourcing all of your parts.

Check out Hoffman Amps (EL34world) for loaded board vendors. They are based on turrets but you will find the community pretty evenly split between eyelets vs turrets. I have done both and it is a coin flip for me!

I procured my iron from Allen Amplification and was very pleased. Hoffman sells great iron too as well as every electrical component needed to build a 5F6A. Really nice forum at EL34world. Many here two-time there as well. Great, no BS (but polite) folks just like this one! :D

I loaded mine in a 2X12 curly maple cabinet but would have used the attached if I had chosen the traditional route. I didn't find an active site for Dueltone Amps so I don't know if they are still around.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Many here more than willing to offer their sage advice.

Have fun,
Dave O.

THanks for all the info everybody! When I buy a chassis and pre assmebled board will it come with some documentation, basically an over view of how to put everything together.

If you buy it as a kit possibly. But if you buy just as parts it is assumed the buyer knows what to do with the item they bought.

Transformers will come with a diagram of leads but not necassaryily where to connect them you may have to convert colors to match the layout / schematic.

See my first post for the order of assembly

* fender boards are sandwich boards *
meaning the top board gets the parts them you sandwich the leads under the card with a solid piece of board to prevent shorting to the chassis

if you have doubts try a fender champ as your first build. Very easy but the practice is the same for most fender amps and they make hundreds of kits you can follow.

Travis if you need instructions then your better off getting a complete kit from Mojotone or Marsh, there may be others I don't know for sure.

Thank you, I work with Greg from this forum and I think between everybody here and his help along with learning tons from reading posts and articles on building tube amps I should be able to build it and not need a kit.

I got my cabinet from ebay $220, $80 mojo chassis, turretboards.com board, bassman replacement iron and what's left is to work off the Fender 5F6A schematic and layout and your done.
