Kitchen backsplash for front panel

Post by Ken Moon »

I just finished up this amp - if you're looking for something different in a front panel, this is stainless steel industrial kitchen backsplash - it should look pretty cool under stage lights, and it resists beer and other food items 8)

I don't have a gut shot of the finished amp, but here's one a few hours before completion:

The back looks like this:

Thanks for looking :)

It's called the Talon - it was designed by an amp co-op called Gothik Amps, and is basically a TW express a1a preamp with parallel input triodes, into a cathode-biased, no-NFB 2x6V6 poweramp, with a low-ripple 2-choke power supply.

It's tighter sounding than a TW, and works great for drop tunings - not a lot of clean on hand though, this is a hard-rock-to-metal lead amp. The coupling caps are generally smaller throughout than in a TW, and there are some added grid stoppers.

The schematic is on my jaxmoons04 photobucket page and on my web page at moonguitaramps.com. I've made some mods here and there on individual amps, and I'm still looking for the "right" MV, but the circuit is a good one as shown.

Pretty cool man. A beer proof amp. DAMN! Why didn't I think of that. Your gonna be rich..... And when you are as clumsy as I am something like this is a big plus.

Great looking amp Ken. :)

On VR5 if you put a 33k resistor across the pot it will improve any scratchiness on the pot. I tried the 25kL and then the 50KL on an Express but did not like it.

Oh wait I see your not running yours the same, your shunting through the middle tab rather than putting the pot in line to act as a type of power control.

For what is worth IMHO the most musical master volume control is the dual pot pi mod common on old bandmasters and bassman. I can post a diagram if your interested.

No, you saw it right the first time. The schematic is just drawn funny. It's just a 50k-L pot in series with the bias resistor, which cold biases the PI.

At least 3 others have built this amp with the scaling control, and they like it, but for a TW type amp, it just doesn't sound right to me, and it's wierd that it doesn't turn the volume all the way down. One friend suggested I rename the pots, so the scaling control is called GAIN, and the Gain is called VOLUME :o

I'll try your suggestion of the parallel resistor. And thanks for your nice comments :D

Thanks - I'm sure I can find that - I'm always open to other ideas - I've even gathered the parts for a VVR control, but I hate to get that complicated.

Ken,

Its weird about that scaling pot, my friend Colossal has had good results with a Marshall type amp but in my wreck its not that good. :x

I'm like you I want to stay away from resorting to the VVR, not that there is anything wrong with Dana's VVR, I just want to try different things.

Right now I just use the guitar volume control. :)

Is that stainless back splash material hard to cut? Stainless is very strong material even to drill.

I ordered it online pre-cut. I wouldn't even attempt it myself.

If anyone's interested, I'll dig up the web site. I think it was about $30. They have several other styles including a cool scalloped look I'll probably try sometime.
