recommends for a young jazz player - ext cab
Hi, my nephew is going great guns as a young jazz player and he recently got a Polytone amp. Its the smaller amp in their line and he needs an extension cab to go with. He is in jr High and he travels around a bit with a jazz orchestra. I need a recommend for a 12" 8 ohm cab that he can use for the next few years. Budget - under 4 bills if possible.
thanks

You'll not likely take this to heart because you'd have to hear it to really get it, but if you can find either a cab with a peavey "scorpion plus" in it or find one, you should really try it. I've tried a lot of speakers and this is the only one i would actually consider a jazz speaker ! It sounds like shite for distortion, but for clean it's as mellow and round/full as i have ever heard, much more so than most. It's cast frame and 400 watts, so it will never distort. Yet the design makes it light weigh. Not sure if it has a neo magnet or what, but it's as light as the typical 60 watt speaker.

You might want to look into Avatar and (slightly cheaper) Lopo cabs. Avatar also has a decent selection of speakers if you want to buy one loaded. Their quality is very good and certainly under $400 for a loaded 1x12. I purchased an empty Lopo large 1x12 a few years ago, and it wasn't top shelf craftsmanship but it sounded fine and was really affordable.

+1 on the Avatar 1x12. I just got one of the "oversize" ones, the G112. Sounds great clean with an old Altec 417B, I picked up two of those on fleabay for $50 each recently.

Sundown made a single 12" open back cab loaded with an EV. It's small lite and sounds great! the sundown amps have gained fame with the jazz guys. the polytones are great amps as well! I love the MiniBrute on upright bass! you might want to look at the Roland Jazz Chorus line and see what you can pickup to run as a backup amp or cab. The musicman 210 is also a popular jazz amp. just thinking for under $400 you can probably pick up a full amp and plug the polytone into the cab or have the option to run stereo.
whatever route you go. make sure the polytone has enough power to excite the built in speaker and the extension cab. and the ohm loads add up correctly!

The Avatar G112 Vintage Custom cabinet is $199 + $35 shipping. It's a really well-made and handsome cab.
I would suggest an Eminence Cannabis Rex with this cab for jazz - there are lots of other good speakers, but for around $100 shipped, this is a nice choice.

If weight isn't too much of an issue, I'd try to score a deal on a used TL-806/Boogie Thiele cab with an EVM-12L. It'll do jazz and then some. Under 4 bills should be doable with some hunting.
If you can do the cabinet work, the TL-806 cab plans are out there. (There's Boogafunk, but there are some complaints about long waits for items allegedly ready to ship . . . ) A lot of people report liking the Eminence Delta Pro 12A as a work-alike for the EVM.
I do wonder about the Egnater Rebel 112x. It's a ported cab with a slightly altered (?) Celestion CL-80. Boogie is using another CL-80 variant, their C90, in their current thiele cabs. Haven't tried them, but they're supposed to bring the bass pretty well for a small cab. $250-ish.

Doesn't Lopoline make Hermida's cabs?
Might get them a little cheaper going to the source.
