FWIW.... what I use really depends on the amp. I built two side-by-side tweed deluxes to experiment, one with all jensen/angela paper in oil caps + "audiopile" resistors and the other with standard carbon comps and orange drops.....I really like both amps, but the plain's the only one that really has the sound people associate with "tweed"... the hi-fi style is very smooth and warm, a great jazz amp, but it sounds almost nothing like an old tweed
So like everyone seems to be saying, try go get as many diferent types as are available (within region and budget) and then use your ears as you go. I do think that some designs are best replicated (if thats what your going for) by just using as close to the original as you can.
Also, FWIW, not that I have golden ears or anything, but I haven't heard a change from yellow to white mallory caps. I've done probably 7 re-caps with the new white ones and lots and lots with the old yellows.

there is a reason why fender uses xicon's.... it makes the amp sound like a fender.

Re: Mallory 150's, white vs yellow?
I just started trying Mallorys recently. I've received yellow and white. One of the supplier says they cannot promise a particular color (AES?)
I've been telling my self that they are probably exactly the same but my mild ocd won't let me mount 2 different colors of the same value next to each other. (Or is it cap-racism?) I am not a cap racist! That was on Seinfeld right?

If it says "Vintage" on it, -it isn't.
