Dlite more towards Violin tone
In a nutshell what are the main mods that will take a stock 22/33 Dlite more towards a Violin tone.
Is it the " tweaked mod" , bigger iron, players touch, speaker (s).....

Re: Dlite more towards Violin tone
Hi Ange,
I pretty much have my amp modded to the specs on the Tweaked layout.
I have got it to sound much more Dumbly using these values.
But the #1 thing is, playing technique. These amps seem very sensitive to pick attack.
By picking softer, you can really change how the amp sounds.
I am a hard picker by nature and it was a difficult transition to the D'Lite.
If I am just playing harder rock I don't worry about it.
The other thing is I put in a much bigger OT, which is a Prosonic OT.
It's about the size of the PT.
I feel this also helps.
So it is a combination of a lot of things including playing style to get the violin tone.
Also you have to realize that most if not all Dumble owners play the amp with a Dumbleator.
Didn't you build one of these?
Where are you at with your amp component wise?
What power tubes do you use in it?

Playing technique is important.

Thanks for the link Scott. Great tone, attack, and ES-345! This clip captures a playing style to complement and bring out the amps response. I liked the way Allen switched back and forth w/ and w/o a pick, although preferred his heavier attack w/o a pick.

If you are going for the violin thing it's tough to beat a pair of 6V's.. The harder you push the better they get..If you want to go the distance and use older 60's tubes Grey smoke glass RCA's or or the grey plate GE's GTA's 22 watters are also a good choice I would use at least 50uf of filtering on the plates help keep it tight.. I would lean on a slightly smaller Output transformer Deluxe reverb perfect... If you can find a good used one that's broken in and has a few years on it even better.. I would also consider raising the tap for the presence to the 8 ohm if you want to really smooth it out at lower volumes.. I would also consider going to the higher plate values 150-180k on both sides smoother...the skyliner should sound good and try to use the .01 mid cap..I would also use the mid boost switch between .002 and 390 whatever here I suspect the higher the value the better as you want those mid's accented..I imagine plate voltage on the older tubes to come in around 350/370...With these types of builds it's sometimes a good Idea to go with a tube rectifier this way you have more control over the plate voltages if you want to raise and lower it.. Don't forget to bias each time..A cathode bias fixed bias switch is something you may want to consider if you want it to sing sooner cathode bias will help there...Try to find a good set of Telefunkin 12Ax's and keep the plat voltages on those around 200V on v1...I would use the Silver mica's for a smoother less hair and the PS series to help pop the mids..Sometimes the clean channel cranked through the 6v's will give you a better type violin tone than the OD will since most of the violin thing resides in the 6V's rather than preamp distortion... This is where I would start... Hope it helps

Seems like Allen is married to the RC booster... that is what he's adjusting on the video, right? Either way, he sounds great.dogears wrote:Playing technique is important.

Re: Dlite more towards Violin tone
Tony, for what it's worth, the best "violin-like" tone I get is out of my Blues Master amp when playing a Strat on the bridge pickup and with the tone rolled back till about 6/10. The other amps -- 100K Skyliners -- don't seem to get that as well.angelodp wrote:In a nutshell what are the main mods that will take a stock 22/33 Dlite more towards a Violin tone.

Re: Dlite more towards Violin tone
One other thing is Eminence makes a speaker called the Cannis Major I believe.. Alnico with a hemp cone that also does the Violin thing very well..Thought I'd throw that in there as well..Once again Good Luck!!

On the other hand doing everything opposite of this can work too - Just Sayin'talbany wrote:If you are going for the violin thing it's tough to beat a pair of 6V's.. Re: Dlite more towards Violin tone
You could just buy a violin with a pickup in it.heisthl wrote:On the other hand doing everything opposite of this can work too - Just Sayin'
