'Chassis Run' 124ish Build

Post by odourboy »

As the second person to receive a chassis from the recent run, I felt an obligation to fast-track a build as a test drive of one of these babies.

For your viewing pleasure, completed yesterday, a #124 inspired low plate Skyliner nonHRM 100W build. Although the circuit is pretty much from the #124 'handbook', I took a few liberties - the most obvious is the use of a precision power supply.

Since it's just finished, I guess I'm in the early tweaking stage, but I have to say that straight off the bench, this build sounds really nice. I didn't even have to fiddle with a dropping string value (a first!).

I've included a few pictures below. For anyone interested, I took a bunch of pictures along the way to sort of document my assembly steps, and posted them on Photobucket:

Cheers!

Holy shit your fast Brian. That looks great. When it settles in I think we all would like to hear some clips.

Where did you get the iron from btw? I think I found a local source but Im curious where you are getting yours.

Likewise! I just got mine yesterday! That looks really good! What are the 12AX7s, can't quite make them out?

I was thinking of putting 12mm Alpha 50K pots where the four red tip jacks are and putting 5 tipjacks on the back between the IEC slot and the fuse. I have four old used RCA blackplates I want to put in there, just for old times sake, and they are not a really well matched quad, more like two pairs.

Thanks Chris! I'm planning to post some clips.

On the iron, PT is a Hammond ordered from Electrosonic in Toronto or Allenamps.com (I've bought this type from both). The choke came from Allenamps.com for sure. The OT is a Heyboer I bought from Funk. Hammond has a new Fender replacement 100W OT with 4, 8 and 16 (1760W) out now that I'm going to try:

They're there - one is hidden and the other matches the color of the socket so perfectly it's almost invisible.

V1 and V2 are 'ARS' which in this case are re-branded Chinese. Those were just for initial testing. I've pulled them in favor of a new production Tung-sol in V1 and an old Mullard in V2. V3 is a Ruby (also re-branded Chinese) which I'm leaving. It's nice and bright and almost perfectly balanced.

Who is selling board sets? I want to build a Bluesmaster and it uses some of the PCBs, like the modern power supply board.

Man you are fast!

Excellent looking chassis!

You guys sure did a good job on spec'ing them out.

What is the green board that the power supply is on called?

That looks really cool.

I see the term "precision power supply" term thrown around here quite a bit.
What makes that so? The radial caps?
What D amp is that power supply found in?
Tom

Don't let that smoke out!

No one that I'm aware of. As far as I'm concerned, you'd be welcome to pick up the gauntlet!

This is called a 'printed circuit board'. :D It's a one-side PCB with solder mask on it. Funk had those made - I had a set left from a group sale he did.

I don't know where the term came from, but it features pair of lower voltage radial caps in series on every stage rather than the single higher voltage axial caps on B2 thru B5. Also, all stages are on the one board rather than distributed. I don't know when HAD made the transition. #124 doesn't have it. #199 does. Somewhere in those years, he moved to the PPS. Maybe Funk, Dogears, Gil, Max...??? can say exactly when it was introduced.

I find it somewhat disturbing and alarming that My boards Just "Drop in" that chassis since they are not the same size as the Dumble boards,

Please tell me that after all I have done for the members here that someone didn't just take My chassis to a metal shop and copy it verbatum- :( :( :(
