AX84 doesn't compare
I just built a High Octain from AX84 and the tone just doesn't compare to my D builds.
Does anyone have any mod suggestions to get a good D'ish tone out of this amp?

Can you post a schematic? also, what speaker setup are you using?danotron wrote:I just built a High Octain from AX84 and the tone just doesn't compare to my D builds.Does anyone have any mod suggestions to get a good D'ish tone out of this amp?
Re: AX84 doesn't compare
Here's the schematic......
I am using a 112 pine open back cab.....tried it with a Celection 70/80 and a G12-65......its a little shrill and doesn't have that touch responce that I like with a D style amp..........do you think if I change the bias point on the preamp....220k/3k3 and 150k/2k2....do you think I will get something a little better?

Re: AX84 doesn't compare
IMHO you simply can't get this tone from a single ended amp, I tried for about a year to get an Hi-Octane to sound more Dumble-like but finally gave up.
Re: AX84 doesn't compare
Really dislike the sound of the HiOctane - more a metal head's amp IMO. You might get more sounds out of it by creating a DLM type amp - at least you'd probably get some touch sensitivity.
Just my 2c

Basically a mid 70's Marshall
Basically a slightly modified Marshall 2203 from around 1975. FWIW I wouldn't bother with it except maybe to try other speakers.

Re: AX84 doesn't compare
summarily dissed that shit, ouch.
There's another thread in here indicating the Dumble thing best occurs
in the 100W format. There's food for thought and grounds for further research IMO.
I'm still gathering all the components for a build in one of Brandon's
exquisite chassis. This will be quite a steep curve compared to any amp
I've built previously.
My comments are eminent.

You can do it, and it'll be totally worth it. I scratch built one my first time around. Just take advantage of all the great layouts, gutshots, etc, especially Rob Livsey's archive, if that's still up.Noel Grassy wrote:summarily dissed that shit, ouch.

Re: AX84 doesn't compare
Exactly which dumble is this high octaine shooting for?
Re: AX84 doesn't compare
I don't think it was ever supposed to be dumble-y, just that the OP wished it sounded a little more like one.M Fowler wrote:Exactly which dumble is this high octaine shooting for?
