D-LATOR SOUND

Post by sergio »

Hi , I have notice that, when I insert the d-lator the sound it changes, some suggestion to improve?

Maybe a parallel send/return instead serial?

Thanks.

Why not try parallel and see if like that better...

1. Dumble used a 220k/250p in parallel (mounted on the send/return jacks) on his model #124, which in effect wil convert a dumblator from serial mode to parallel mode, when engaged.

2. The Kleinulator, a light version of the dumblator using FETs instead of tubes, has a switch for parallel operation. It use a 100k resistor followed by a 47n capacitor in parallel - not on the jacks as #124, but in the circuit as you can see in the diagram.

3. The tube buffered reverbs, that several people has added to their clones, use a 200K resistor in parallel.

So, you could simply add a a 100k to 220k resistor between your amps send/return jacks. It only takes 2 min. to solder in and test drive.

My preference used to be towards parallel operation. I didnt like the idea of degrading the Dclone signal with digital converters.
However, in my limited experience, serial mode on my Kleinulator sounds more 'real', the effects seem to meld better into the sound even with my modest reverb and delay effect pedals - dont have a Lexicon reverb or TC 2290.

Looking forward to hearing about you findings and preferences.

Is the change "for the better"? My understanding is many folks prefer the dumbleator in circuit even without effects! My experience with WEM Copy Cat echo's suggests there's "something" good added by extra tubes even when they are trying to be as unobtrusive as possible.

but YMMV

You can try tapping off the .047 V1b coupling cap coming off the clean channel..Send that through the loop and mix it back in @ the PI using a 220k mixing resistor...This won't change the feel and tone very much!! 8)
This method does 2 things adds reverb and depending on how you set it up can add a bit of the clean channel on top of the OD giving you a nice articulate chime on the top end ....Works good especially with 50 watters that get a little hairy on the top when you really get em going!!!

Basically the same method as I posted earlier accept this has 2 EF 86's which would in my opinion be pretty gainey for a clean style amp?...Other than that real similar.. should work fine..Serial loops can be in my opinion a bit more tweaky as well as alter the tone and feel a bit more than the Parallel ones do!!
If your careful and take the time to set em up right as well as have a nice outboard effect with a nice analog preamp the serial loops are in my opinion a better way to go!!!..
