Grail tone?

Post by Tdale »

I see lots of advice on how to improve or change the tone of an amp here. Dogears had som interesting mods in his "system". Usually when I see these changes, they seem to be quite far off the 70's layout that I have based my schematics on.

There is alot of talk about the "Grail" tone. I guess that's the Ford/Carlton tone?

But what if my goal is to have a good blues amp. That means nice clean sound, maybe a bit bassy, and a growling, beefy overdrive sound, but not necasserily crazy-overdrive like the metal shredders use...more of a breaking up overdrive...more a growling kind of sound.

Any tips on how to get that kind of amp/sound?

Hopefully Dogears hasn't drifted too far to the dark side to help out here. LOL

My best guess would be to model the clean section after Fender. Maybe try 100k plate load and 1.5k/22uF cathode values like the early '70s ODS. Same on the OD except go with the 5uFs. I've also found that .047uF mid and 270pF treble caps sound a bit bluesier to my ears.
