Recording of my 3 channel amp's latest tweaks

Post by Bob-I »

I made a few more minor tweaks.

1) The Fender channel was too dark, so I swapped out the .022uF final coupling cap with a .0022uF. Just the ticket, I swear it's a Super Reverb now.

2) I changed the mid boost from a 500pF in parallel with a 330pF to a .001uF. The 500pF didn't sound too good, but the .001uF really pushes the mids and gain.

3) Swapped the clean master from an audio to linear. It's was almost ineffective until you hit about 4:00. Now it's more even all the way up.

4) Swapped one more carbon film with a Dale. The reverb bypass resistor was a carbon film that's been shifting pretty dramatically (never buy Radio Shaft stuff, even in an emergency). The 100k resistor measured 88.2K. The change was dramatic but I'm not sure if it was from the value drift of the Vishay sound.

5) Finally I changed the screen filter from a 47uF to a 22uF. Dogears swears he hears a difference, I'm not sure. Cain't hurt.

Also I'm loving having a Les Paul again, even if it is an Edwards. I recorded "Revelation" the first chorus using the Fender channel both PU's, next the Dumble clean on the neck PU, then the Dumble OD first with both PU's, then I kicked in the mid boost and the bridge PU and at the end dropped the mid boost out, lots of PU switching at the end.

You'll hear the changes.... and the clams.

sorry bob... i missed this post somehow...
honest opinion.. i think you took a major step backwards in the fender channel... WAY too bright for my taste... just kinda thin, and i think that tune deserves a real fat clean, once again just my opinion..

I love that tune though, wish i could play like that.. i been noodling for so many years i cant seem to do anything with a backing track, and my brain follows my fingers instead of the other way:)

that fender channel was perfect in your older clips... there comes a point you need to walk away from the amp and its done:) Time to build a new one....

If you are low on projects ill send ya one of mine:)
Hey man, you're leanin on my dream......

It would take me about half an hour to download that file. The hamsters can't run fast enough on the treadmill to go any faster.

No, you do NOT "suck that much".

You laid down some pretty cool lines there. I really liked the sliding 6ths you did.

I dug the smooth distortion. Really barks and bites on the bridge pup. (sorry for all the canine words in that sentence) You're getting some of the cool Dumble-esque chirping sounds on the pick attack that are so fun. Perhaps that Fender clean sounds better in person than it recorded. Dunno why, but it sounded a little "small." Could be the pickups?

I'd be proud to have built that amp!

Great amp, Great playing, wish I could play like that.
I love the Fender clean, sounds better than the '63 concert I have.
I think it will go great with a cranky tele or a strat.
Love the D channels as well of coarse. Well done.

Thx for the replies and thx for the comments on the playing.

The varied opinions are interesting. Maybe I went too far with the changing the coupling cap. There's no question that this amp needed more improvements as there was a terrible hum plus the Fender and Dumble cleans were almost identical. My goal was to have a Fender bright and Dumble fat clean as well as Dumble ODS.

Compared to my Super Reverb clone this amp is fatter but what's more important is perception. I went pretty drastic and I questioned myself on that. I think a better choice for the coupling cap will be a .01uF just like a Super Reverb. Yes it's fatter in person than on the recording but the recording is a pretty good representation of the amp.

No MLP, it's not the PU's, these are Seymour Duncan SH-1 and SH-4 and I couldn't be happier with them.

So what I'm hearing is that the Fender channel is too bright and thin, but the Dumble tone is good, barks well.

Icetech, this will be MY amp for a long time so I want it as perfect as I can get it. No moving on to another amp right now.

Visited iBob on 4/15 to jam.

Had my LP Std into the 3-channel, specifically the clean dumble channel.

Sounded great...had plenty of botton without being muddy.
