More Clips, 100W HRM

Post by Bob-I »

I haven't been satisfied yet. I replaced my test tubes with Tung Sol 6L6GC STR's biased at 33ma, V1 is a Mullard reissue, V2 EH12ax7 and V3 Sovtek 12ax7lps. Speaker is an Emi Delta Pro 12A in a TL806 cab from Boogafunk, mike is an SM58 Beta.

The filenames describe the guitar and channel, although at the end of the StratOD clip I turned the PAB off.

Comments? :D

Sounds pretty decent to me. What is it you're not satisfied with?

I figured I'd wait until more folks listen and comment. "Pretty decent"
isn't what I'm after

Thx for listening.

I don't think it sounds bad, but it is a little too loose on the low end in a couple places and a little too muffled on the high end for my tastes. Sounded real good with the slide, though. Is it wired to the stock ODS 101 specs?

If you don't like it, is it because of too much low mid making it slightly brassy? That would be my guess.

Not sure how many hours you have on the amp yet Bob, but my 100watt BM took a LONG time to break in. I was ready to yank the Mercury OPT out and replace it with a Heyboer. After about 100 hours, it's finally starting to sing like I expected. Also, if you haven't thrown a Dumblelator together yet, DO IT! Pop a little delay in the loop and the amp gets very lively at much lower volumes. (Not much, just a touch does it.)

I also found that in a heads-up comparison, the EV12L does sound better than the Delta Pro in a Dumble ported cab. The EV is not quite as smooth, but it's more articulate. I also finally broke down and bought a G12-65. I hate to say it, but it's worth the money.

Lastly, while it's cool to have a 100watt clone, I find they have to be cranked to really give up the goods. You and I have been spoiled with low wattage Dumble clones.

Bob, how are the strings on your guitar? I'm hearing some congestion in the sound, but as you know from our PM's, I couldn't tell you where I'd tweak. Hang in there. You'll get it.

You guys are hearing the same thing I'm hearing.

Normster: You're right, this amp has less than 5 hours on it and I can't open it up here at home. I built it because I'm not getting the cleans I want at gigs at "over the drums" volume. No fear of that with this monster.

heisth and dave: You're both right, low mids are making the bottom end muddy. With slide on the neck PU it's better mostly because the slide makes the tone brighter.

James: I should change the strings, but I have brand new strings on the PRS and I'm hearing the same congestion.

Maybe increasing OD1 coupler was a mistake. I didn't have the best sounding tubes in it at the time.

Clearly I have more work to do, and lots of playing too 8)

Thx for the comments, great input.

Oh, and there is a Dumbleator in the loop with just a touch of reverb from a Quadraverb. Actually it's a "Starr-a-lator" using a parallel loop but similar buffering to a Dumbleator.

Sounded great. Rock that strat back in position 2 (bridge/middle) for sultans and I'll bet you nail the tone almost exactly. Sounds really sweet.

This was my thought too. Have you tried it with something other than the delta pro?

Try a 33pf to 47pf bright cap on the OD master. Make sure to use cables to and from the loop that have about 120pf to 180pf a side. Then readjust stack.

The bright cap is the secret sauce.....
