EV TL806 Thiele

Post by BobW »

Does anyone have any plans available w/ a little more detail than the EV TL806 link? I'd like to build my own.

Have you scolled to the second page?

Edit: Ok wasn't being a smartarse here - just couldn't believe you needed MORE than the EV plans. I built eight of the 15" version from similar plans back in the day. Sigh...

This is the design for an open port bass reflex cab. It is not the design for the dual tuned port Thiele box than Dumble favored. Maybe someone here has those plans....

I don't know what Dumble may have favored, but that is THE EV Thiele design of fame (TL=Thiele) and the same that Mesa Boogie copied for their even more famous Mesa Boogie Thiele cab.

I used the stock design. FWIW, I did make the little cover for the larger middle port but prefer it wide open. These are nice with a variety of amps. One has a Swamp Thang and the other an EVM12L. The cabs are finger-jointed oak. The box on top is a homebrewed D-lator and a TC Electronics G-sharp. As you can see in the lower pic, I just screwed a Marshall-style handle on top.

One little design note not in the available diagram: allow for the thickness of the lip on the frame. The cast housing of the Electrovoice is about 1/2" thick compared to maybe 1/4" on a stamped frame speaker. Since these are front loaded, you need to fir-out enough space to mount whatever sort of grill you are using. In my case, I added furring strips along the outside edge of the baffle and then made the covers you see out of 1/2 BB plywood with industrial mesh (sprayed black) screwed to the inside. The straight-on shot doesn't show it but the EVM cab grill assembly sticks out further than the Swamp.

Very recommended project, Skip

Thanks for clarifying Scott.

Yes, I am interested in the dual port design.

In order to determine the area / dia. of each port, is it just simply,

Area of the bass reflex port - port cover area = (2 x port area) ?

A port is a port is a port.

The function of a shelf port is identical in theory and operation to a circular port just a bit harder to tune. And tuning is extremely critical if the cabinet is going to be usable.

The TL plans are good ones, let face it, I am sure EV probably knows as much about cabinet design (and I am sure more) than Dr. D.

I bet you are right.... Just most want the historically accurate repro!

Btw, I'd love to try one of these ported boxes....

The Mesa cabinet (I am pretty sure) is a direct knock off of the TL806.

But FWIW, I have reversed uncle howies dimensions based on measurements of out buddies cabinet and based on plugging them into the theile equations he was pretty close to maximally flat. But I would not have used cardboard ports due to thier lack of rigidity. Also 3.5" ports are TOO small for the volume of the cabinet and the throw of a 12L. There is where howie was wrong.

potentially dumb question here but...

Am I reading the EV plans right? I am seeing a covering(air tight) over the middle port of the cabinet. The reason I'm asking the the photos of the cabinet don't seem to have that port covered. Not trying to be a critic, just trying clarify. I got the impression it would make a difference in sound and performance, if the port is to be covered, and wasn't.

The port is removable. Read the data sheet and you'll see it changes the low end response.

Thanks Bob. Multi-tasking and looked at the drawing and not the notes. I have it now, thanks again.
