Mallory Orange Drops?

Post by brewdude »

I was rummaging through some bins of old caps that my brother had and found some orange drops with the following label:

.10-400V
PVC401-10%
MALLORY

Is this a suitable choice for a D'clone pre amp?

I also found some marked:

SPRAGUE 6PS-S47
.047 +/- 10% 600DC

Both caps have a vertical line on the right side.
Is this the side with the outer foil?
If so, should the line be oriented towards the "downstream" side of the circuit?

I also found a bunch of ceramic disc caps and some caps that look like silver mica ones that I have, but they are different colors.
Can anyone tell me if the different colors are indicative of any thing noteworthy?

I've noticed that ceramic discs are preferred over silver mica at Amp Garage, but at another forum they are shunned in favor of silver mica?

Any enlightening comments?

I don't know that mallory's but the 6PS are prefered by lots of folks here. I'll bet the Mallory's are decent for PI coupling, maybe even tone stack but you'll have to try to find out.

As for the ceramics, yes they're prefered for the bypass and tone stack caps. There's a grainy texture to the tone that silver mica's can't duplicate. Silver mica have been seen in a few Dumble's but in general the tone is too brittle for the Dumble.

All that said, the goal is tone, if you like the silver mica's and mallory's then use them.

Personally I like the Xicon MPP's and ceramics as well as the 6PS.

When I ordered my 6PS caps I found that (at least from AES) I couldn't get all of the correct values ie. 0.022 (for HRM tone stack) vs 0.02 and having read that HAD usually used PVC's within 1% tolerance I figured the Mallory's were the only option. Was I wrong?

It seems to me that .02 would be within the 10% tolerance of a .022.

Can anyone enlighten me on the vertical lines?

On the old ones the lines meant the - lead, not that it was polarized but that meant it was the outer element (like the can of an electrolytic). On the new ones, if it has a line it means nothing.
