Hybrid PI?

Post by greiswig »

I'd posted this question in the "files" section at the tail end of another thread, but I don't think people saw it there. Or else you're all learning to ignore me.
greiswig wrote:(WARNING: Heresy follows) Has anyone ever tried splitting the difference between the PI's? In other words, .05uF coupling caps, 665/16.9k R pair, 36k FB resistor, and a presence circuit using a 13k pot (right!), 2.5k R and .5uF cap?

Maybe we should call it the Magnum PI.

Well I'll admit that I say your other post and was curious.... this could have merit, but I'm too lazy to do it myself so I didn't repsond. Can you try it and report back? :D

From the look of things, that's what I'll have to do if I'm curious enough. I guess I was hoping for some tech input, something along the lines of "you can't use those resistor values coming into the PI..." or something like that. I don't know if there is anything "magic" about either the standard Dumble or the Bluesmaster PI's.

The other hesitation I have is that compromises like this sometimes turn out like moving to the suburbs to escape the city: you end up with all of the drawbacks of living far away from work, the music scene, etc. and none of the benefits of the country like being alone, because everyone else had the same idea.

To my ear, it would be nice to have a little more "bloom" than the standard PI, and a little less compression than the Bluesmaster PI. That's why I thought of trying something between them.

PS - sorry about the "Magnum PI" comment. Truly a groaner, but it sadly might stick if this experiment works.

I'm certain it would function, but no thoughts on how it would sound.

Thanks for your input, Brandon. No way to tell how it would sound but to try, I suppose. But it would be nice to know before I try if there are any glaring errors.

I'm attaching a pic of what I had in mind: black is the standard PI values, blue for the Bluesmaster values, and red (like a Ferrari!) for the Hybrid values.
