"Speakers for a Dumble" Thread

Post by MarkB »

I just thought I'd start a thread for speaker recommendations. When I do my build, I'll be starting out with the Reverend All-tones I have in a 2x12. Any contributions appreciated.

I'd like to include some info on "The Master"'s favorites, and also his preferred cabinets, tunings, and configurations, if I'm not imposing.
Thanks, D

Great thread idea.

I've tried Weber 1230-55 which was too Brittish to my ears, A Carvin 12" of some sort which was ok also, A Jensen c12n didn't quite have the bottom end I liked, Celestion G12H80 which sounds supprisingly good, very Dumble, but the one I settled on for this amp is an old JBL D120 with a paper dust cover.

Now for the cabinet...... That Crate just doesn't cut it. I bought an inexpensive 2x12 from e-bay made from Birch ply wit a partial open back. It sounds great with 2 of the Celestions in it.

I've only tried a few speakers, but so far I really like the Tonespotter. Nice thick mids and a tight bottom. I also have an Alltone 1250 but it's a little too scooped for my taste. It does sound awesome for cleans, though.

Scott has been raving about the Red, White, and Blue, but I haven't heard it yet. I need to get over to my buddy's house and plug in. :)

Hi,

I've had great results with, of course, EVM 12L in a 2x12"open back cab.
I also like the EVM 15L which I use a lot. Very open sounding are the JBL D and K series. These are my favorites.
My '68 G12m marshall cabs also love the dumble circuit, in my opinion.

But, they are all very different sounding. To me the speaker is one of the major voicing spots in an amp project.

Great idea for a thread!

EVM12L - classic speaker for these amps. They have a very very characteristic tone. Flat response and almost honking tone in my opinion. Not for the Robben tone IMHO.

Celestion Lead 80 - No cone cry, pretty smooth flat response. Not unpleasant. I have a THD 2X12 with them and it sounds nice.

Celestion Vintage 30 - Worst shit tone ever with this style amp. Nails on a chalk board. Great rock speaker with other amps. Horrid crap with the Dumbel style amp. The peaks and valleys are all in the wrong spots and get rid of the sweet and add harsh.

Eminence Wizard - At first very nice. Full body and creamy. Over time I grew to not care for it. Cone cry. Also, a bit of a wierd presence dip and peak around 2k. Something wrong imo.....

Eminence Tonespotter - Much more open than the Wizard due to smoother presence peak. However, the speaker is has a big dip at 1500hz. Works ok with Hybrid A topography but it unuseable woth HRM amps due to the scoop of the post od stack. SOund is anemic with HRM. A little cry as well.

Eminence Tonker - No cry. Very very pronounced mids. Too much for the Dumble style amp IMO. Maybe with a 270pf treble cap... Just too much mids IMO. Handle tons of juice.

Eminence Red White and Blue - No cone cry. Much flatter response than the Wizard and Tonespotter. The mids are fullbodied unlike the Spotter. No wierd presence peak as well. Handles more juice. My current speaker.

Weber 1265 alnico - I like these. I used them for a while. Real sweet.... I need to put them back in my 2X12 and get to know them again. Maybe a bit bright if memory serves me correct.

Let me reiterate Never use Vintage 30 speakers with these amps!!!

Great rundown on speakers "Oh Great Dogged One".!!

I am not a big fan of the V-30's either. But the amp pictured below is a real puzzler. In a band enviroment it just kills. It is 100watts and the cab is a slot back 4x12 with V-30's. It must be the HI TECH Sovtek MIG100 iron I used when I built the amp!!

EVM 12L, Emmy RWB, Emmy Wizard and the lowly tonker are my current favorites with this type of amp. I am currently using a 1x12 Tonker loaded cabinet, a 2x12 EVM cabinet and have another 12L that will go into a 1x12 cabinet.

Must be the tranny and the specific values of that amp. Also, the type of music your kid plays and his setup and technique. Everytime I try the V30, I cringe.....

I think it is the sum of the parts. Everyone who has played it commented on how good it sounded. Actually the silver amp belongs to my son the drummer and it gets fired up about once every 3 months.

My son the guitar player has this 50W amp with 4x12 Wizards.

But I agree, the V-30's would not be my first choice in these amps.

I had the GDS here to test speakers. We tested EVM12L, Tone Tubby Alnicos and Tonkers. All mounted in identical vertical 2x12s like the one below. All three speakers worked reasonably well and depending on what sound you were going for an argument could be made in their favor. My personal choice were the Tone Tubby's. I like the smokey dark alto range. They seemed to respond very well at the volume I wanted to play. The Tonkers seemed loud and kind of hi-fi, the EVs sounded very articulate a tad harsh so you had to work to dial that out. The EVs sounded best when they were run way too loud. These cabs are sold by Two Rock they are supposed to be Dumble like.

OK guys,

I didnt realise what a HUGE difference choice of drivers would make to this amp.

Having "finished" my ODS build Ive been trying different speakers and cabs. My standard cab is a 4x12 with Vintage 30s ( originally built for my Marshall Anniversary head ( which never gets gigged since I started building better amps ! )

I tried a couple of Celestion G12's ( with original whizzer cones removed ) together with the vintage 30s inside the 4x12 and to start with I thought I liked the edgy tone - but I just removed them last night and OMG ! what a difference- much smoother creamier tone with just the 2 V30s, indeed close to the Carlton "last night" tone ! Ive also tried most of my stash - Classic lead, Fanes, Celestion Powercell ( horrid ) and various unbranded 12" guitar spkrs.

I keep seeing references to the Eminences ( which are harder to get here in the UK ) and esp Scott's recommendation of the Red, white, blues.

I can only get hold of 1 R,W,B at moment where I am, but the rest of the Eminence partiot range is in better supply through the main distributor.

What other recommendations does anyone have ?? Cab is goo both closed back and open back as I have found.

I think I will bag the R,W and B anyway and wait for another to be imported, but is there another speaker in the range which will compliment it well ?

Thoughts .........fire away ........

cheers

Somewhere I read in the Eminence literature that the RWB's are the cousin of the Eminence Governor. I'm not sure what cousin implies about relationships between speakers, but I take it as indicating a similarity. Perhaps the Red Coat series is more available in the UK since they are made there.

I really like the EV 12L, but it makes the amp feel really stiff. Currently I have a Weber Ceramic Michigan in my combo and I like it quite a bit, but they're very inconsistent, I have another one that I bought at the same time and they sound nothing alike. I also have a semi-open 112 that I just put an eminence Swamp Thing in and I like it alot, it has an easy feel more like a celestion, and it doesn't have that powerful midrange like the Tonker. At the Last NAMM show I sat in the Eminence booth and played through a Two-Rock Custom Reverb and every speaker they had and I kept going back to that swamp thing for what I like. I also have an Altec 417 8H series II with a paper dust cover that's really nice. I don't think I tried the Red white and blue, but I know I didn't really dig the tonespotter.

The amp sounds like crap through G1275's, and less than spectacular through V30's, but for some reason it REALLY sounded good through a Dr.Z Z-Best cab which I believe has one of each....

I don't have any experience trying different speakers with my ODS HRM 2x12" combo built by a local tech. I'm using Eminence's Cannabis Rex and a Private Jack. I really like these combination. Full midrange, deep bass response (although not very tight and defined). Only drawback is a bit of way too loud highs, I believe due to the Private Jack... Not unpleasant but definetly room for some improvement...
