Would this Bassman head be a good specimen?

Post by DaveBo32 »

Hi guys,
I know this guy who has this 1968 fender bassman. This thing is just sitting in his closet. He had me see if I could get it to work. I replace two of the preamp tubes and replaced the 2 prong plug with a 3 prong. I left the original pwr tubes RCA6l6, since I was fixing it for nothing. The amp sounds awesome. He got this thing for nothing...man. I told him he would probally want to overhaul all the tubes and have the caps checked out if he is going to gig with it. Long story short, he gig with it and it died again..no sound. I told him he probally needs to replace those tubes...Oh well..I'm thinking of getting a ampeg bass amp anyways, he replied. He stuff the old bassman in his closet and thats it. Rotting away. Well the other day he was wondering if I was thinking of selling my schecter PT Custom, I told him I might since I hardly ever play it....Hum. I notice the Bassman is a popular choice for dumble mods. I bought the guitar for around $600 bucks + $89 for the case. I hardly ever play the thing, its pretty much in mint condition. If I can get him to trade, do you guys think it's worth it?

For $600 + what parts you would have to buy it would be about the same money as doing a Funk build from scratch. More than a D'lite build from scratch.

Figure the guitar and case are worth $450, If you could get him to give you the amp and $150 - $200 for your guitar that would be a good deal.
I wouldnt want to put more than $250-$300 into a non working bassman.

I've done a fair amount of math regarding doner amps.

What you get with a non-functional amp is 1)chassis, 2)cabinet, 3)iron, 4)hardware (some tube sockets, pots, etc). If you do some serious bargin shopping, you can get all that new for about $300-$400.
When I search ebay for a doner bassman or other, I cap it at around $300 depending on condition, etc. Just some food for thought. Check ebay for another schecter to see what the bassman would "cost" and decide if you think it's worth it. You'll definitely have fun with it. I love my bassman d-clone.

Thanks for the advice, I'll probally have better luck selling my guitar on ebay, then just buying everything needed with the money to build another amp.
