speaker choices

Post by rutledj »

I know that the Celestion 12-65 seems to be the speaker of choice (or the EV 12) but has anyone tried any of the similar speakers like the Weber 1265?

I guess I'm looking for a cheaper solution but perhaps there isn't one.

These are more 'budget oreinted' and both sound pretty fair with D style amps IMHO:

Emi RW&B
Weber California (ceramic, paper dome)

Recently purchased an Eminence Delta Pro 12A. Affordable alternative to EVM 12. Very pleased with it so far. http://www.usspeaker.com/DELTAPRO12-1.htm
There may be better prices to be found. It's priced in between a G1265 and the RWB. Something about the mids in an RWB that don't do it for me. The Delta Pro seems to be a more balanced speaker - although more exspensive YMMV.

I did not know about the Eminence Delta Pro. I'm a big fan of both EVM and Eminence. The specs sheet looks like a page from the EVM sheet.

To date my 2 favorite speaker combinations are...

Eminence Tonker and Swamp Thang in an open back combo. 16 ohms each. The Tonker alone was a tad harsh in the mids, but plenty of bottom. The Swamp thang has the mids and highs but not the bottom.

The other pair that's working well for me is the warehousespeakers.com Vintage and Classic pair. I got these for $20 each awhile ago and after quite a long break in, they sound great in a 2x2 standup cab with partial open back. More bottom and chunk than the Eminence but plenty of highs.

I use the Eminence to gig with a more classic rock band, 60-70's. and the V30/Classic clones for a more 80-90's type band.

Bob-I,

Funny you should mention those Warehouse Speakers. I have a 2 x 12 cab that right now has the Delta Pro 12A and one CL80 clone $20 speaker. I am really digging that combination. One of the CL80's sounds very much better than the other by the way. Did the tonality change dramatically for you on break in? One was so nasally I couldn't play it long enough to improve it. The other sounded stellar right out of the box. Seems like I paid $40 for one speaker - still a good deal for how good that one sounds...

P.S. I should mention that there is a lesser Delta 12 that I have no experience with, but looks like it's recommended as a bass driver.

Yes, the V30 sounded nasal, terrible. But I left it at my band rehearsal space so I wouldn't have to haul a cab around and after 8-10 hours it really opened up. No more nasal tone and a ton more bottom end. Sounds really good now.

I've talked to a guy who uses the Delta Pro. He said that the DP sounds very similar to the EVM 12L, except that it has a little less highs.

Hello all.
I've tried with big satisfaction also a Celestion G12B150 speaker ( 150w ).
It's the speaker that is supplied inside the Marshall 1912 cabinet (one the worst cabinet ever made IMHO) , that I discovered sounded good in an open back cabinet.
I have two pearce 1x12 cabinets- - open back with such speakers and I can say that they are really great.
I've tried several jensen new spkrs ( alnico, ceramic, neodimium) and not a single one has been satisfactory on d-style amps.
As always this is a personal point of view.
If some of you wants to part with the G12b150, please drop me a note . I'll be interested in buying them.
Ciao

Well, my Delta Pro came in a few days ago. I just put it in a 1x12 open back tonight and so far I'm really pleased. Very flat response! At first I thought it was a bit to much in the upper mids, but a slight tweak to the mid control and things were right with the world. I love the top end. Very clear and sweet but not spikey at all. I think it's a keeper.

Thanks for the recommendation, Stelligan! :D

It's actually mean to be a budget PA speaker. I am building a stereo 2x12 for a friend's chapman stick (stick.com) rig and I plan on loading it with a pair of the delta pros. Glad to hear you like it.

Normster,
You are very welcome! Glad it is working for you. It seems that I am pushing this speaker, but at that price point it is hard to beat. I have retired the RWB's and am soon to put them in the "for sale" section.

How difficult is it to change the dust cap in a RWB? Or can it even be done? I recently bought a RWB and a Texas Heat and preferred the RWB...so I bought another to go with it (in a 2x12) but would still like more sparkle. The RWB has that big, Zurette dust cap so I was thinking that a smaller, more transparent dust cap might yield more sparkle (I don't even know what Zurette is but it looks like paper to me).
