Post by Colossal »

New rig rundown posted today featuring Clapton's latest touring setup. You will note the Dumble modified Bandmasters.

I don't like the sound of them at all. I much prefer his sound when he was using the Soldano's and the EV 4x12.

Also on a personal level, he was really sick a few years ago, could hardly play, was in a wheel chair !! then he got better , did crossroads 2019 :) ... then he had the covid vaccine and it made him really sick again...he could hardly play....he was really pissed off about that and understandably so. My friend Margarit a leading viola player still has brain inflammation caused by the vaccine she took in March.

So I think a little slack is required when you know the full circumstances. Obviously the press/media don't want the true circumstances to stand in the way of a good story.

anyway I still don't like the Dumble amps :)

They keep his mic input on zero.

Interesting.

Per video it's not really a Dumble mod amp, HAD just build it to fender spec with old parts (all within good tolerance). Therefore it is more like the "perfect" Fender. I remember he did a blackface amp in a similar way for Robben Ford. I personally don't find it anything special as well from the recent videos I heard of Clapton

I have noticed, after repairing hundreds of vintage Fender amplifiers over the years, that sometimes the really magic ones have some pretty drifted parts. I learned the hard way that if the amp sounds great, to ignore what my multimeter says. I think some of the tolerance suggestions by Fender were economic more than electronic. I remember when Dumble was going to build the first Bandmaster for Clapton and was having motivational problems, Clapton had to buy him a table saw to get it going. As far as Clapton's playing, he could wear a jumpsuit and play Sinatra songs as far as I'm concerned. The Bluesbreaker album and all of the Cream albums have earned him the right to do whatever he wants. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlvA0sMvnqo

Instead of wiring them to sound their best at 7, might it have been easier to just dial the amp in set the knobs to point at 7?

Sorry, but that article is a bunch of liberal crap that has nothing to do with his guitar playing. There I said it.

I posted this thread because of the Dumble content and sighting, but I'm regretting that now. Maybe we should lock or delete it. We don't need this negativity stinking up the place.

Interesting read. Might be pay-walled.

What happened to Eric Clapton?
