Dumbleland Anyone?

Post by talbany »

So I pulled the schematic from 002 and ditched the reverb and wala! Dumbleland.
Dumbleland is supposedly a bass amp so I would imagine it might have a slightly different tonestack.
I don't play bass so used the Classic/Deep configuration and of course used the output section from #002.
This only took a few minutes however given what we know and having built an 002 should work just fine and sound like this one :D

Hello Max and thanks for Jumping in :D
Steel String Singer 120 Watt: $3,350.00...................................... 4X6l6 power tubes ,w/Reverb, w/Filters,No Driver
Steel String Singer 150 Watt: $3,520.00....................................... Power tubes ??,W/Reverb, w/Filters, w/Driver
Dumbleland Bass 150 Watt: $3,145.00........................................ Power tubes ??, No Filters ,No Reverb, w/Driver

Dumbleland Special 150 Watt: $3,390.00............................, w/ Filters, w/ Driver ,No Reverb,(2 x 7025, 1 x 12AU7, 1 x 12BH7) 4x6550

Dumbleland Special 300SL: $3,935.00 .., 6x6550,w Filters, w/ 3 tube Reverb, w/ 2X12BH7 Pi and Driver config.
So Judging by all of the various model D-Lands and SSS 's i have seen and given his watt ratings are on the price list this is what i assume. The main accessories being Filters/Reverb/Driver/Power tube configurations.
Am I close?

Given the Dumbleland was the predecessor to the SSS the Dumbleland Special was designated and voiced for guitar and Bass and the Schematic I posted of this version of my Dumbleland (with classic stack) Would be similar to either ser#009 or the one SRV played in Jackson Browne's studio for the "Texas Flood" recordings Correct?

BTW..The 300 in the Dumbleland 300SL if this is referring to 300w the only way to approach the kind of power is with 6 power tubes running class AB2..If this is not referring to power then do you know what this 300 is??..See Below 8)

Thanks..Tony

Ah HA!! Found it :D
Chris Cross's D-Land 300SL..6 X 6550 and it has Reverb  ..this thing is a BEAST!
BTW it looks like there are several other differences like PI Driver configurations and reverb type in the 300SL as well.

BTW.You gotta love a guitar amp with 3 handles on top

Thanks for the sheet Max

However? Most of this we already know. So here are some things we need to know

1. Does this amp use the Low impedance Tweed mixer circuit? or the standard high impedance 3 tube mixer?
2. Does his tone stack have a 2nd generation (w/Deep) or Classic stack (w/Deep) Since we know Skyliners have a mid boost.

The 2 BH7 setup is no doubt there to help drive the extra 2 tubes. Thats easy to figure out since they are interchangeable with an AU and a 7025 (basically)
3. If it's true that Chris C 300SL has the tweed mixer and not the standard 3 tube as what is in #004 then what differentiates it from SSS #002 other than the higher output power transformers (impedance selection) and the dual BH7 setup..This would only take me 5 min to modify the schematic of #002 into a Dumbleland 300SL if true

Those are now the real questions :D
BTW. With the reverb turned off on my #002 I can get real close to the sound of #009 in the videos at the same settings

Tony, I almost send you a pm about the Chris Cross amp and Dumble bass amps a couple of days ago as I was reading a few old threads about ODR/SSS/DL ;)

If I would voice a D style amp for bass I might try to go up on cathodes bypass caps, probably tweak the stack here and there.
Lots of famous bass tube amps (non Ampeg) use a Fender Blackface type preamp with bigger cathodes caps btw and it does work.
I would also try to run an AC coupled tube driver like Odyssey or Marshall Major. It does work on the Major (with monstrous transformers).
That’s for a 100-150W.

But for the big guy I think he uses an SVT/V9 design. Or at least based on that power amp. We already know he might have use a poweramp/powersupply lower chassis of an SVT on one of SRV SSS and that dual 12BH7 speaks for itself imho.

That must be something to plug a bass in that 300SL !!

I'm pretty sure that the Dumbleland 300SL wasn't designed with a bass player in mind. And as you find both 150W amps in the 1986 price schedule - "Dumbleland Bass" and "Dumbleland Special" - I have strong doubts that the Dumbleland Special 150W was designed with a bass player in mind either: https://reverb.com/item/3551755-1978-du ... nd-special "... rumored to have been originally built for Merle Haggard."

Thanks everybody who added to the discussion so far.. :D

If I were to build a Dumbleland Special here is what i would want and or recommend :D

1.Driver tube set up for a 12AT7 and a PI tube set up for 12AX7/7025
2.4 x KT-88 or KT-100 output valves 200 watts
3. A Classic tone stack w/ Deep switch
3. Accent switch instead of a full Presence control
4. Half power switch
5. 11 selector Hi/Low Filters
6..Black suede cabinet :D

If I were to upgrade it to a 300SL w/ Reverb it would have a Tweed mixer / Accutronics 3 spring long delay tank
and Hopefully Dynaco Iron..

As Tony of course knows Dynaco never sold a 300W OT. So that's a good one!

No Max I did not know that? However if David Halfer ever did wind a 300 watt transformer I would want it.

Instead I guess i will have to settle with this old thing I pulled from a Bassman 300..It should do ok don't you think? for my "Frankensteinland" 300?
Here it is sitting beside an original 1959 Tweed Bassman 5F6A output transformer..You would think it was a choke for the 300 huh?
