Is SRV playing his Dumbles in this video?

Post by dragonbat13 »

It looks as though he adjusts two steel string singers during this awesome performance.

Is that the case? He sure is making them howl like a Dumble.

If not, what do yall think they are?

The only one I can make out is top center, I see a Dumble SSS.

...and the one to the right of the SSS is probably a Fender Super 4x10. Just guessing.
I build and repair tube amps. http://amps.monkeymatic.com

IIRC The Silverface one in the video was his first and got it right around the time of that show 84/85 time frame. He generally liked to throw in a few 15" Vibroverbs modded by C Diaz or a Super for extra stage splash..When I saw him with Jeff Beck he would do a few encore tunes at the end. Stevie just used the SSS by itself with a 4x12 Dumble cab. Here is a clip of just him and the amp at Lone star Cafe gives you a good idea of what the amp sounded like solo..Very clean glassy bright and some nice compression to boot. The unmistakable sound of the cathode follower driver at work..Stevie referred to this amp as the "King Tone Consoul" 150w 6550

What got me wondering was how my amplified nation does its harmonic feedbacks so well. Even with the clean channel it will feedback through my strat very well. This was the key reason I always wanted a dumble type amp. In the video I posted it seem that he goes to the black sss that is to the left of the silver one and makes some adjustments. And this video shows him using controlled feedback more than any other footage I have seen. So it made me wonder.

As far as the other footage, I've never seen that. But it definitely has the punch. And the reverb is nothing like a fender reverb to me.

he's using a tube screamer in the solo that's why it's 'howling like a Dumble' you can see him bend down and adjust it when he starts the solo and kicks it in.

great guitar swap by his tech :)

Hi Tony, are you sure?
"… Stevie Ray Vaughan calls his Steel-String singer the "King Tone Consoul". … There are some different things about Stevie's. His is set up more like a bass amp, modified to accommodate the guitar range. … ”

Hello Max
Pretty Sure. Here is what Bruce Egnator had to say about the amp when he worked on the SF one in 86.

Copyright © BRUCE EGNATER. All rights reserved.

"My SRV_Story 1986
Roughly 30 years ago, I received a service call from a local venue in Royal Oak, Michigan for Stevie Ray Vaughan. I had heard his music but knew little about his gear. The tech told me he had a pile of Fender amps and this Dumble amp, called a Steel String Singer in need of repair. I had worked on a few Dumble Overdrive amps but had never seen a SSS amp. I had Mr. Dumble’s phone number so I called him, and he answered. I explained what I was going to repair and who it belonged to. He detailed in “tech” terms what the circuit was so I would know what to bring with me. His explanation clearly described an SVT so I took the parts and gear needed to repair an Ampeg SVT as well as the Fenders"

The SVT style was also confirmed to me by Jeff Bober whom also worked on the amp in 89
Having built and played one now for 7 years #002 The sound the CF driver makes is pretty obvious... to me

BTW. The later Black Face one you have which was taken in SRV's museum was the later one. It was constantly having issues and Stevie had some falling out with Alexander over a repair cost,
I am not as familiar with that amp..

Happy New Years :D
