D' Lite build finished...pics!
Hi all. Just finished my D'Lite and I'll fire her up tonight.

Beautiful work as always.
Just one comment. I see that you have the plate and cathode leads crossing at right angles, always a best practice right? wrong. Check out the Dumble pics, https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=393 every Dumble has V2b plate and both cathodes running parallel. I tried this on one of my amps and there is a difference. There must be some capacitance or inductance HAD was shooting for by doing this. Try it.

FWIW, I had the same experience when I changed the routing of the V2b cathode and plate wires in my D'Lite. Subtle, but noticeable (and worth it!).Bob-I wrote:Beautiful work as always.

Thanks Bob, I'll try both when I fire it up tonight.Bob-I wrote:Beautiful work as always.

I experienced that as well on my HRM build.FWIW, I had the same experience when I changed the routing of the V2b cathode and plate wires in my D'Lite. Subtle, but noticeable (and worth it!).

Finally fired it up tonight...Woohoo!!! Congrats to Norm and Moss on a great job! The amp went together nicely using Norms and Moss' layout. Fired up on the first try and has no Hum or noise. I'm pretty much a newbie to the Dumble stuff and now I'll have to look a little closer. Now...off to rip it apart and put the relay circuit in there. Maybe I'll play it some first!

How would you describe the sound change when you do that? Brighter? Smoother? More harmonics? Less hum?kleinm wrote:FWIW, I had the same experience when I changed the routing of the V2b cathode and plate wires in my D'Lite. Re: D' Lite build finished...pics!
Hmm, smoother and less hum? I'm not sure if he was manipulating the capacitance riding between those wires or what...but to my ears the sound is smoother and has a lower noise floor.

I also feel that after the initial "chirp" of the pick attack, it's slightly warmer.kleinm wrote:Hmm, smoother and less hum? I'm not sure if he was manipulating the capacitance riding between those wires or what...but to my ears the sound is smoother and has a lower noise floor.

So my eyes are not so good
So you say he pulls both cathode wires together with the plate?
I would love to see this proven by a scientific plot.
The cathode is so close to ground compared to the plate I'm just not seeing the opportunity for much interaction.
I also dont see him doing this on his mods to Fenders or Marshalls I have seen. The fact he might do this on his amp might be force of habit, he always struck me as a deliberate amp builder. It is not like him to trust the interaction of two wires and their proximity together. He would look to reduce interaction and find a more repeatable solution to tone shape.

Re: D' Lite build finished...pics!
He absolutely and deliberately runs both triodes cathodes against the second stage plate. In particular, the cathode from the prior stage. You can even see the bends in the wires to keep them snug. Look at the pics. I have some really close up ones too. He generally does this on the amps that have the tube sockets reversed so the "B" triode cascades into the "A" triode.

Re: D' Lite build finished...pics!
Scott, can you post a picture of that practice to illustrate? Is the D'Lite that close to the circuit your describing to make a difference? I'll have to spend some "quality" time with the amp this weekend.dogears wrote:He absolutely and deliberately runs both triodes cathodes against the second stage plate. Did you take this picture? Im curious about something.kleinm wrote:Maybe my opinion doesn't matter...but I can provide a picture nonetheless. Here's a gut shot of an ODS.
Look at V1/V2.
What was the ground wire on the terminal strip for V1 connected to?

There's this one too. I forget who got us these, I thought it was Allyn.
