great Robben ford guitar wank episodes

Post by norburybrook »

Been away for the holidays and have listened to the recent robben ford episodes on guitar wank. There's still one to go but the first ones are very interesting on a lot of fronts.

http://www.guitarwank.com/podcast/

what surprised me was him talking about no longer using the OD on his #102 for live work, he now uses the zen drive and only uses the clean channel on the amp. ain reason is because he has all his FX in front of the amp and the OD doesn't work with reverb in front of it. He does say in the studio he will use the amp OD and use studio FX for reverb/delay etc in mixing.

He's also mentioned he was going to try and move away from 100w amps, he said he's got to...perhaps he has hearing damage, he didn't elucidate. He talks about his tendonitis problems that started when he was in his mid 30's touring with Dave Sanborn. All good stuff, a great listen if yo have a few hours spare :D it's quite interesting as things go on as they're drinking scotch and you can tell things are loosening up later in the interview :D

AFAIK He's not been using the OD side of 102 for several years now on most live gigs. More than likely due to Cartage issues, back and forth from the States and Europe, The venues he plays now are (mostly) smaller club gigs. Volume problems generally come with playing the smaller venues. Most of those types of tours in UK are backline rentals or they call someone they know that has just built an ODS style amp that will bring one out for them to use

LOL :D

really though it's just a matter of using the dumbleator isn't it? I'm sure he could get a small one built and return to using his FX in the loop like the old days. Who am I to argue though :D Interesting that larry has now gone to using the Dumbleator, he wasn't a fan at all of the original ones but is liking the Bludotone version he's using now. He's flying with that, in fact that's all that had arrived!!!

Happy new year all.

So Larry brings his lator and not an amp  Weird. Did he set that gig up with you in advance or did he call you hours before and just showed up with a loop?
I heard a story once that Larry actually threw his Dumbleator in a trash can.
Brandon's Bludo-loop must be a whole lot better then

the amp got stuck in customs , the Dumbleator was perhaps in hand luggage, who knows. He called me the night before the London show's. He wasn't a happy bunny :D His tour manager came over the next day and picked up my amps/speakers. I went down and saw show 4 from 6 and was surprised to see the Dumbleator, I said '' I thought you didn't like the Dumbleator'' he said ''I didn't, but I like this one Brandon made'' . I must say it was the best gtr sound I've heard from Larry in ages, and I'm saying that as objectively as I can :D

What a weenie to drive a reverb pedal, seriously.. umm and I know it's going to make me twice as popular when I say he hasn't been fantastic since Yellow Jackets.

Imperial Strut destroys noodling flat vocals.

For touring should just pick up a Kemper and capture his rig.

Imperial strut was the first time I ever heard Robben Ford and I've been a fan ever since. I remember it like it was yesterday, I had put it on to cassette so I could listen on my bright yellow Walkman as I stood waiting for the bus to music school as a young music student at the UK's only Jazz college at the time.
That was the track that just hooked me in...line and sinker......I think it was the track that got him the gig with Miles Davis. Tommy la Puma played Miles that album when Mike Stern had left and Miles was making Tutu and needed a new guitar player on the road.

My impression is that his audiences are 95% guitar nerds who want to hear the Dumbles, 5% wives/girlfriends of same who have allowed themselves with varying degrees of reluctance to be dragged along. You might as well suggest that he try to do a tour where he just sings Katy Perry songs and doesn’t play the guitar at all. At least the 5% would probably like that.

Ok so the amp was stuck in customs.Another reason not to bring your Dumble out

Overall I've built around 20 or so loops if you asked me which one I liked the best I would say they all kind of sounded and felt basically the same. I always thought the FX unit played a bigger role but hey he is Larry Carlton.

When I had VVT Amps and was working with many of Nashville's biggest country acts I would sometimes send them amps for TV shows and CMT performances, since all of them hated using rentals from cartage companies and were always grateful to get one. I am sure Larry was grateful to have "the best gtr sound" that night.

BTW. Jack Pearson (Allman Bros) playing through an ODS (X-Model) VVT rental one night. No loop
