Pics of my #102 at mark knopflers studio this week

it's quiet round here at the moment so I thought I'd post some pics of my Dumble rig at mark Knopfler's studio this week.

I was the MD of a 17 piece band, 5 horns, 4 backing vocals 2 guitars, two keyboards , percussion, drums, bass, Violin !....it was like the good old days


and we were recording live to an invited audience all oh headphones with a full film crew....the other guitarist was using a KEMPER!!!!!!

Anyway, it was incredibly full on , but a great couple of days.

Ha...Mark asked me if I'd won the lottery or done a bank job!

A freind of mine who was Eric Claptons guitarist came along to be in the audience and he said he could easily tell the difference between the 'real' amp and the Kemper used by the other guitar player, which was interesting as I own and use a Kemper too and think they sound great.

I was using the clean sound 99% of the time on this project but the #102 has a lovely clean sound to me, it's nice and full and not ice picky so suied the music here. I had to crank the input volume as the OD trimmer is set quite low so I doesn't OD much with a strat/single coils.

THe Sealed ,ported EVM cab sounded great. I would like to make another 1x12 oval backed cab though with a Classic G12 80-16 ohm in it. Thats the best speaker for the OD sound IMHO. I've just not got much space in the studio.

Amp was Mic'd with an SM57 and a vintage U67 through into the Neve VR desk. THe amps were in booths so we were only hearing them back through out InEarMonitors. Not my prefered way but with so many live mics in the room it was the only way to do it.

Cool. I'd be quite proud to say they were built by your own hand. I love the clean sound too, my 124ish amp has that in spades. Pretty fancy setup in that studio!

Congrats, Marcus; what a great gig! From your description, it sounds similar to the Snarky Puppy Family Dinner series, which I really dig. Esp. Volume 1. Such a great format to record a band - It's nice to see more folks doing this. Any chance we'll get to see the end product?

Do you plug the 8R EV on the 4R tap and the 16R G12-80 at 8R ?
I would have bought an 8R G12-80 not a 16R to run the 4R OT tap so I'm interested why you choose a 16R.

I like the EV a lot (old EVM serie 2 in an Ampeg closed back) but I will find that G12-80 to test for sure, Try to find a lighter speaker too to run an open cab. Read good things about the G12H65.

That's exactly the template we were working from this has a touch of eastern/spirituality about it too as well.

I'll keep you posted as and when it's finished. I think it will be a while though. I've got a meeting with the engineer a week on Wednesday to go through the tracks and export out what I need to mix. We were running about 70 tracks @24/96k . I'm then going to do a rough mix for the film producer to work with then mix it properly in the new year.

No I dont missmatch. THe 8 ohm EV goes to the 8 ohm tap on the amp. The reason I mentioned the 16 Ohm G12 80 classic is it sounds better than the 8 ohm...go figure...I've no idea why but my guitarsit friend who was there(Eric Cplatons guitarist) treid 16 different speakers with my first built #102 and the 16 ohm G12 calssic 80 was his choice. the 8 ohm was a close second but for some reason the 16 ohm sounded better on the 16 ohm tap of the 102 no missmatching was done with th espeakers the impedence was changed to match the speaker.

He has a deal with Celestion and the guy there said the classic 80 was a real sleeper of a speaker and a lot of high end players like Joe Bonnamassa were using it.
Ironically, I got mine from a friend who asked me if I wanted to buy it when I was visiting, I didn't actally know much about it but it was a british made celestion and I always thought it sounded good. It wasn't until my friend who's incredibly anal about all this started doing his intense 'testing' that I realised what a great speaker it is with the Dumble.

PT or DP?

No one uses DP in Europe and , more importantly running that amount of tracks with that many people to monitor needed the pro tools HDX hardware system.

I'm going to mix in the newly updated, 64 bit Cubase 9.5
