Will my speakers sound good?

Post by dragonbat13 »

In general,

How would a pair of vintage 30's sound in a 2x12 cab with a 2x6l6/50 watt dlite?

Reason I ask is because I have a pair in my twin reverb. I am planning on putting an EVM 15L in that, and using the vintage 30 celestions on the Dlite.

Then my rig would be both amps with an amp switcher.

If the vintage 30s are not the best choice, what speakers and open or closed back cab? My current plan is a closed back 2x12. Or a cab with a removable panel.

I think the only way you'll know is to try it :D

I'd hazard a guess that they'll sound pretty good however :D

If the amp sounds good, those speakers will sound good too.

I played a high plate Dumble ODS into V30's and I liked the sound.

yea, I understand that sound is subjective to the listener.

I was just kinda wondering if I was totally wasting my time or not.

I guess a better question would be what speakers do most use in a 2x12?

And more importantly, sealed or open back? I have seen a few cabinets with an oval back. I may go that route.

I do not mean to say it is subjective but that is true too.

I mean to say that what the V30 puts out is directly proportional to what the amp puts out.

Good amp...good tone...bad amp...bad tone.

If this was a kit amp, it is hard to say what the result is beforehand.

Depends on the room for me. In my primary practice spot, it's a little corner of the room, and an open backed cabinet sounds a bit ill defined to the ear because of the sound bouncing off the three walls and ceiling. Closed back is much better.
I build and repair tube amps. http://amps.monkeymatic.com

I like open back cabs because I can easily close them up depending on the room. I block the opening with a guitar case or whatever is laying around at a gig when needed. It's a rough simulation of a closed back when I think it's necessary.

I don't like the laser like focus of closed back cabs, but I find rooms with a lot of reverberation are easier to control by 'closing' the back.
