Dumbleland KT88 Build

Post by Aaron »

Just finished building my Dumbleland inspired build. It's been an on/off project from the last couple of months.
Trannies and reverb are from an old Fender 160PS.
729v on the plates, 360v on the screens and bias is at -45v.
Still deciding on a FET circuit or not, the amp favours single coils more so might wire up hi and low inputs, don't know yet.
All that's left is a cab.

Thanks,
Aaron

P.S:- This thing is HEAVY!!

Very impressive! What did you end up doing for the driver tube power supply?

Hi Martin,

I just wanted to get this finished so I went with an Odyssey PI - Driver.
Dumbleland #009 has only 1 bias pot so I have assumed it's not a DC driver.
I think the jury is still out on whether they are DC or AC, more likely it's whatever HAD wanted at the time!

Thanks,
Aaron

Hahaha, I will Jim. I had my BOG Fuzz Face plugged in the other day, sounded very nice. I really like that fuzz.
I'll make a clip, but won't be for two weeks, I'm away for work.
Out of the three Dumbleland/SSS builds I've done, this one sits between the two tone wise. My SSS#002 is very glassy sounding and don't really use the filter circuit in it, my EF86 Dumbleland build is very warm sounding, love it. This one has a great clean low end thump and the filter circuit works great with this amp.

Thanks,
Aaron

This is one heluvanamp. Impressive as usual. :D
Patiently waiting for clips.
I finished some months ago my long planned SSS/TR mix build, based on mhartman great layout. Very happy with how it turned out. There's something really special with this big boys. Still trying to capture the greatness in the room with a mic...

I've done a full schematic with voltages. I'm in Europe for two weeks but will post as soon as I get back.
Will do clips as well.

Very nice build Aaron,
What differences in the preamps of your Dumbleland and SSS #002 do you credit for the Dumblelands great clean low end thump?
for instance;
Are the cathodes of V1 , 25uf/1.5k.
difference in tone stack pot values or TMB cap values.
different slope resistor value.

Here's a basic iPhone recording.

Like Niki mentioned, it's really hard to record the low end thump of these amps. I had the volume on 2 and the master on 1 just so the sound wasn't too distorted.
@CHIP, I feel the feedback loops in #002 restrict a lot of the sound. Has anyone experimented with different values?

Thanks,
Aaron

As always a nice build Aaron. I'll have to visit at some stage and try out these amps. How does the LSL sound through these amps?
Yours Sincerely
