Tweed Overdrive Special Jr.

Post by 10thTx »

A few years ago, DaGeezer and I worked together to come up with the Tweed Overdrive Special which used a simple 5E3 vol/tone control in the "clean" channel.

Recently, Doug Hoffman announced that he is going to carry a small "lunchbox" sized chassis. 12X 6.5 X 2.5

I was pondering different designs that could fit inside that tiny chassis and came up with this idea. It might be cool to get a nice overdrive amp in a small chassis like this? I've attached a editable SCH schematic and layout.

I'd probably try a 12AY7 in V1 and a 5751 in V2.

NOTE: I think Doug will be carrying 8pin hole to 9 pin hole adapters? You would use that for the 3rd 12A_7 hole. The paralleled board would be about 7.38" (using a typical 28 hole tagboard as reference).

With the interest in the Tweedle Dee stuff, maybe this would be of interest to someone also?

Doug and 10th, this is cool stuff.
Keep it coming.
Love the idea--2X6V6 or 2XEL84 and an efficient speaker is pretty loud.
Thanks.

Sure. Check for errors and compare with schematic. IF there is a discrepancy, then go with the schematic.

The original TOS had a 12A_7 triode into a 5879 which this JR version does NOT have.

Having said that, I think it will sound somewhat similar to this tone which was recorded with an original TOS (with 5879 pentode) and using 6K6 tubes:

I think the amp has some reasonably decent overdrive and tone for a tiny amp.

This looks great as usual.
One more to the list of pending builds - I seem to lately like 6L6 better, so maybe I'll do a Sr. version.

Thanks, I'm going to build a 5881 version in a 5E3 style chassis with other changes. The caps will be mounted in a small Fender doghouse.

I think that could be very cool & sound great!

IF you do build it, please post a review of the tone (or preferably a sound clip) so others can decide if it would be a good choice.
