Great blues amp - lowplate classic

Post by bluesfendermanblues »

Last thursday I finally took my lowplate classic 50w out to a gig. What a great blues/rock amp! no effects besides a minimix II with a little Belton reverb. Cabinet was a 1x12 dumble type open back (cel 12G65) and also used the speaker (not the amp) a tweed dlx backup amp for greater projection. (always nice to have a backup - the dlx also has a cel 12G65).

Mainly used the OD for solo and the clean for rythm - execpt when playin "Politician" (Ford version) the OD was used for rythm as well.

Don't have any video or sound clips to back it up - I know, if you dont have footage it didn't happen, only it did :-).

I can highly recommend the classic tonestack with a strat. Have spend many hours with the skyliner, but it is IMO best used for humbucker guitars. You CAN dial a skyliner in to sound close to the classic and wise versa, but I find the classic is easier or faster to use with strats.

Soundwise I prefer the 'feel' of low plates, but honestly cannot really hear a difference between high plates (have build both 102 and 183) and low plates.

Guitar is a modified Strat with SD ant. ind neck and mid and twangbanger in bridge - and the lastest gen. EMG SPC midboost which works fine with passive pu's. Great for solo's and a very flexible setup. For fun I've installed a push/pull volume pot, that allow full bypass of the EMG circuit - cant hear any difference - execpt lower noise with the EMG.

Up until now my grap 'n go gear has been a tweed dlx clone and a small pedalboard with either a providence OD or a Zendrive, but the classic (#124, low plate with classic tonestack and built-in D-loop) is a really versatile amp.

Was there a build thread here for this particular amp?

No, not my particular amp, but The design isa long The Lines of this layout:

I've built a handfull of D-clones. This particular amp is a Re-build Ceriatone High Plate with build-in loop.

Just wanted to share my enthusiasm over a D-amp that works really Well with Sc's.

I should probably put up some pics and sound files.

Hi Bluesfendermanblues,

Clips and pics are always welcome!

Knowing that you like your Deluxe amps, have you tried HAD's variations?
If so, it would be interesting to hear any before and after clips and comments you may have on them.

Best wishes,

Paul.

The Tweed dlx clone that I have build, is slightly modified with
- lower anode cap values (.022 instead of 0.1) on v1a and v1b and
- the in/out wires on the volume pots are reversed to 'normal' current standards.
Therefore, its actually more a 6G3 brown face deluxe that a tweed.

The 5E3 is really great if you want out 'n out distortion like Niel Young (Hey Hey My My) or early ZZ Top (Fandango!), but we want D-sounds don't we? ;-)

Anywho will modify the amp from 6G3 to D-style deluxe values to see if the added phase trimmer will add to the magic.

Thanks very much for posting your experience. I think there are a lot like me that have spent their lives mostly on the strat side of the fence that are looking for this detail. Especially with the pickups, music, etc. After I finish my JM build, I was going to do exactly what you ended up doing. Now if I can just figure out the D-loops and finish what's on my plate, I'll get to it . . .

As Lindley told Guitar Player in a July '77 interview, "I've got a lot of little amps, but on the road, I always use Dumble amps because they never break down. We went about getting the sound in those amps by taking an old Fender Deluxe to Howard Dumble and saying, 'We want this, but bigger and louder.' And Howard got the closest of anybody I've heard."

Actually Steve it is funny you should mention that. I purchased a Bludotone Loop A Lator transformer and was thinking of asking you about a recommendation for an enclosure. My Low Plate Classic sounds good but it still seems a bit bright and a little harsh on the OD when I turn it up. My hope is that the Dumbleator will smooth that out a little. I swapped out most of the Xicon 1w CF with Piher 1W but I think the Vishay Dale 100k plate resistors may be a little harsh also. Not sure what to replace those with yet.

Charlie, it's the 220k Xicon OD trigger you should replace first.
I still have your address I can send you some 100k mecpo/Electra
Check out what resistors I used on my #124 Classic.
I made this last D Lator chassis.

Steve, yesterday I finally received some 220k 1W Piher from Bulgaria. So those will be going in the OD trigger spot and V1b grid. I would love to use some 100k Mepco/Electra on my preamp tube plates. That would be great! I have not been able to source those anywhere. Your Dumblelator chassis is very cool but I may have source a commercially available one. You seem to be much better metal working than I am.
