Howard Dumble history from my dad and uncle...

Post by Chris Brown »

I've never shared this on the internet before but I thought I'd go ahead...

Sometime in the 70s my dad's band "The Shades" had a rehearsal space at "the alley" rehearsal studios in Hollywood... Jackson Browne's space was down the hall and apparently Howard Dumble had a space too.

They all spent a lot of time there and I asked my dad and uncle to recall what they could about HAD... I don't know how clear these guys memories are from the time because there was a lot of drinking and drugs going on or whatever but I'll tell you what they told me.

HAD had his bench/equipment set up so that he could show up in a van and roll it in to the space and set up to work on amps for Jackson Browne and David Lindley.

He was a super hippie and also pretty "sciency". He wore a Hawaiian shirt sometimes.

They said the main thing they remember is that he would leave part of a joint at their practice space and when they smoked it they would be absolutely stuck in their chairs giggling like they had never smoked before.

They said the amps he was doing at the time were absolutely wonderful sounding and super easy to play like nothing they had every heard or played.

Enjoy :)

I bought a pair of shoes from a drug dealer the other day. I dunno what he laced them with but I’ve been tripping all day,

When the family gets together this holiday season I'll hit them up for more details.

Also when I was a teenager in the 90s I had just got my hands on a twin reverb and I was telling my uncle how I thought it was the best amp ever... he shot me down with "no, the best amps are from this guy called Howard Dumble that was hangin' around when we were in California". lol anyway..

Funny, I do some of my best work in that state... Giggling and stuck in my chair at the bench...

Thanks for asking and reporting.

One more question:

When in the 70s?

I ask, because - according to this article - in the mid 70s his shop was still in Santa Cruz: http://www.premierguitar.com/articles/T ... mble_Built

Late 70s AFAIK. From what they told me it sounds like he was there temporarily working for Browne/Lindley.

My dad said one day HAD pulled up with a van and loaded in a bunch of equipment that was "all on wheels" and then he was around for the rest of the time that they were there. From what l understand they were at the alley for about 6 months in all.

Hello,
A friend of mine, Michael Hamilton who was Kenny Loggins guitarist, told me that he used to rehearse in LA and Dumble had a little work room at the rehearsal space. Sounds like this is the same place.

Chris and Charlie,

Thanks again!

Yes, that was the new address after giving up the shop in Santa Cruz.

See the attached picture with his new card on top of a catalogue page with a picture of a "transition generation classic" ODS in a black chassis. And see the attached catalogue page with a picture of ODS #0075, a "transition generation classic" ODS in a silver chassis, built for Steve Farris. AFAIK both amps have been finished in 1981: http://personalpages.manchester.ac.uk/s ... 20%230075/

When sending this catalogue Alexander Dumble added these pages with these pictures of his newest amps and the card with his new address to older pages from a 1978 catalogue still with his address in Santa Cruz.

A musician I know visited him in 1980, and at this time his shop still was in Santa Cruz. But obviously - as Chris Bown reports (Thanks again!) - he went to Los Angeles temporarily before finally giving up his shop in Santa Cruz.

Cheers,

Max
